Better than I expected
And I had very high expectations. I've been waiting for Katana Zero for ages. I had hoped for a game about lightning quick katana play in a moody, noir setting. What I got was a breathtaking masterpiece of exacting, challenging gameplay, and a complex story of conspiracy, regret and psychological horror. It's a game that needs to be experienced. The game is hard, Super Meat Boy hard. Every stage is a challenge, and by the end, you will play through each level more times than you care to. It makes you earn your victory, but when you get that playback, often with you fighting faster than you can track with your eyes, it's worth it. The game includes a very fun dialogue system that lets you interrupt characters and gives you multiple dialogue choices. I have no idea if there's a branching story structure, but there's at least two endings. People are gonna tell you it's not finished, and this is true in a sense of giving you something of a cliffhanger, but it feels complete enough to me that I don't feel like I wasted my money.. Zero learns what he needs to learn by the end. He doesn't save the day, but it's noir, so you would't expect him to. I finished it in under 6 hours, but it's an intense six hours and worth every second, and I expect people will play it again and again. I know I intend to.
