Fun and challenging exploration

A very fun, and often hilarious, exploration and environmental puzzle game with combat elements. The focus is hard-to-find and hard-to-reach secrets coupled with creative and challenging environment traversal. Playing through the story is enjoyable in itself, but much of the game is about achieving that satisfying "100% completion", which provides many more hours of gameplay. There's an obvious comparison to be made to the Supraland games, which scratch the same itch. There's a "metroidvania" factor in that certain challenges can only be met after you acquire an ability. So you'll be revisiting many locations again and again, sometimes as part of the main story, and sometimes as part of the "100% completion" goal. You're going to get to know this intricate world very well. Combat is, at best, just OK. There are a few cool boss fights, but too many tedious encounters with lesser enemies, who keep regenerating and get in the way of exploration. I wish this aspect was dialed down a bit. Traversal can also be a bit frustrating due to imprecise controls and hit boxes. Combined with those pesky enemies you might find yourself dying quite a lot. On the bright side, the cost of death is acceptable. It won't take too long to get back to where you died and retrieve your lost goods. There are also several "trial" areas, which are designed as puzzles, but also require precise and fast movement. It's here that the imperfect controls can become really annoying. But with some practice, and perhaps some help from YouTube guides, they can be overcome. The story takes a back seat to the gameplay, but is told with many funny and polished live-action videos. I laughed a lot in this game. You can play as a dog! All in all it's a wonderful title for those of us who enjoy these kinds of games.

Decent Game, has flaws.

It is a good game at its core, the mechanics are pretty tight; movement feels good, platforming is pretty smooth and not obnoxiously difficult, and the world building and writing is excellent (especially the in-game videos/messages). The game revolves around you exploring, getting upgrades for your suit and platforming your way around, to get the primary exploring objective done, which is actually pretty well focused. There's loads of areas in earlier stages that are clearly designed for you to return with new equipment to revisit and explore. Because the story and narrative is well done and focused, it can be a short game. I did mine in about 7.5 hours. It sounds short, but thats honestly about right, you run out of story, which is fine! The story is great, lets not ruin a good thing. The issue is, that once youre done with the story, re-visitng and exploring the world (without a map or able to place markers) is very tedious, especially with loads of platforming. Other than the main quest, there's very little else to do, and there's not much incentive to do much else, other than achievement hunting. Ther'es also no pause function, which is annoying. Get on sale, you'll have a good weekend with it , especially if you like platforming games. Don't get it thinking its Subnautica or No Man's Sky.

First Person Metroidvania

Metroidvania: it might be my favorite single-player genre. This is basically that in first person. The emphasis here is on exploration and humor rather than deep and challenging combat. The first person platforming is great fun. The exploration and collectibles are spot-on. The humor was well done, courtesy of a sarcastic A.I., ridiculous video ads that play in the spaceship, and whimsical creatures such as a small upright one with two heads that runs away screaming every time it sees you. On combat: To progress to some upgrades you will have to complete certain combat experiments (for science!). These include things like killing 4 creatures within 3 seconds while they are electrified—doable but puzzly and, again, humorous. Some of the boss fights include intresting platforming, especially the one in the DLC area, which is great. The combat did remain interesting for me for the most part because the creatures are so varied. I feel it's criminal that this isn't more highly rated. I understand why people have an issue with the lack of pause, but that is something I can get over since I enjoy the game so much. If you like metroidvania games (exploration, big map with areas that become available as you upgrade your character, platforming, and combat), I would definitely recommend adding this to your collection.
