Nuclear war, post-apocalypse, barren and lifeless wastelands. Lifeless? Not so much! Mutated insects have made their home in a bomb shelter and they're set on exploring the world. Let this point&click adventure welcome you to a hilariously bizarre end-of-times world and join the roaches Jim and Bud on their journey to the surface.
Journey of a Roach tells the story of two roach-buddies, who want nothing but to see the surface world. On their way up, they meet all kinds of bizarre and ludicrous insects inhabiting the post-apocalyptic Earth. In atmospheric 3D point&click adventure style you'll take control of Jim the roach through the bomb shelter, effortlessly crawling your way along walls and ceilings. This innovative and dynamic game mechanic creates opportunities for a wholly new puzzle design. Fondly designed speech balloons offer an unconventional new dialogue experience and the soundtrack delivers and atmospheric, post-apocalyptic mood.
Adventure in a unique environment - crawl along walls and ceilings, exploring secret underground
Two charming, memorable protagonists with humorous, nonverbal means of communication
Atmospheric, post-apocalyptic world with a fantastic music score and beautiful stylish graphics.
Journey of a Roach is an adventure game that is in my opinion aimed for the more casual players. The game itself is not too long and most puzzles are not very hard, but it is great as light entertainment and a fresh breeze for those who are tired of the conventional scraping for survival post apocalyptic games.
The game-play is fairly creative being able (and having to) climb up on walls and ceilings to reach certain objects adds a bit of extra flavor to the conventional rub item A to item B mechanics. I am definitely sure that it's not worth the full price, my price would be no more than 4.99 EUR.
Overall a good game. Cute. Not overly difficult.
Only complaint I have with the game is there are a handful of puzzles that are time based, which I'm not a fan of in point and click games. Start an action, try to quickly select something then start another action all within 5 or 10 seconds. No thanks. Thankfully there weren't many of these.
Don't know what it is like playing with a keyboard, but plays well with an XBox 360 controller.
The originality of many aspects of this game pleasantly surprised me. The changes of perspective as the roach climbs walls and ceilings did not in any way cause nausea for me as other reviewers reported. It is the same effect as a flight simulator, even less because once on the ceiling the perspective remains fixed. The game uses this freedom of movement of the roach to device clever puzzles where you have to find a way to a place you could not reach on the ground.
The puzzles offer quite a variety of challenges and are in general interesting and rewarding. The other insects (NPC's) help you with cartoon balloons with pictures and text what object you have to achieve. It is an amusing way of a build-in help feature.
There is no spoken text but many funny sounds and music. Also there is not much story to speak of.
The game earns its merits by the relaxed atmosphere and clever, original puzzles.
All in all a very entertaining game with many hours of puzzle fun. The value for money was very high for me as I got the game in a GOG-bargain. I played on Linux with Wine (4.0.2) on a very old computer (10 years) and it ran smoothly.
Absolutely gorgeous game, cute, the sound was incredible, the only remark I have is how short it is. The ending is really heartwarming, this game helped me love roaches.
The game design is really fun because the environments are different and memorable per puzzle area, and the main character being a roach and being able to traverse walls opened up the level design to really neat puzzles :) although the ones that didnt even use that trick were still pretty good, and the cutesy childish vibe was really nice and i can see it being age appropriate for later elementary/younger middle school. Still made me think quite a lot tho. Very nice.
