Description
Navigate miles and miles of tyre changing, fuel burning, carburettor busting, mud clattering terrain, through night and day, rain and shine. Adapt to whatever the procedurally generated world of Jalopy can throw at you.

Upgrade, maintain and care for your Laika 601 Deluxe motor vehicle. Keep close attention to everything from the state of your tyres, the condition of your engine and even the space in your trunk. Repair each aspect of your scrappy little car and install unique upgrades to deal with the changing world. Everything from cargo weight to the condition of your carburettor will determine how your car performs on the open road.

The rise of capitalism brings an economical conundrum. Scavenge for scraps to make a small return of investment, or become a baron of the open road and smuggle contraband under the eyes of border patrols to make a sizable profit.

Developer Greg Pryjmachuk worked on the Formula 1 franchise from 2009 through to 2014. In late 2014, Greg began work on this new driving simulation featuring the fictional Laika 601 Deluxe car; reminiscent of the East German “Trabbie”, it will need much love and care to keep it going on this memorable road trip!
  • New odometer keeps track of the miles you have travelled
  • New spray paints available from the Laika dealership to customise both inside and outside of your car
  • Car manual has been overhauled to improve functionality – check the weight limit of your car to improve your Laika’s performance
  • Scavenging game mechanic has been expanded so that abandoned crate spawn more dynamically so eagle-eyed drivers such as yourself can be the first to spot valuable parts
  • New scrap yards added to selected routes – search for spare parts if you can crack the gate
  • Games menu remembers saved game and creates a background matching the new area to explore and remind you where you are on your journey
  • Various road conditions, oil spillages and pot holes are just some of the new environmental details which add to Jalopy’s realism
  • An entirely new tyre system added – players can now better prepare for their trips, with off-road tyres and wet weather tyres affecting grip levels
  • New music from musician Jeremy Warmsley which can be played on the car radio or from a play list
  • Authentic license plates

Good starting point, waiting for more

The product is interesting; the graphic is minimalist at best, but does its job. It give character to this product. Fundamentally this is a journey with your uncle; won't win any prize for excitement, but if you look at the type of game they made, it is totally fine. The hard part is that you drive a car that really should not even exist. It breaks every few hundreds of KM; you need to buy consistently some parts and repair wheels and such; unless you find extra parts on the road; to swap. You can make some money finding items on the road and selling them; but I was not able to actually understand how are you supposed to play this game. The driving model of the car is horrible, but I blame the car; which is put together with staples. Sounds are also to the minimum; but the feeling of the rain on the top of the car, while you try to drive on a street that is pitch black; is really nice. The game has atmosphere; but sadly does not do much with it. As now, I did go through various cities; and the constant theme is to get to a city; fill the tank; fix the car, sleep and go to the next checkpoint. nothing else really happen. The car break down; if you can fix it good, otherwise you restart from the beginning. You can pick routes, but mostly they are equivalent, so not adding much more to the game. Cities are 1 block; there is nobody around; except in the motel. Feels like you are crossing a desert planet, and would not mind seeing more NPC around. As is, the game really offer an interesting approach to road trips, but the total lack of anything to do, make you wonder if you want to spend more time with it. After few hours, really you wonder when the next update with more content will land; but seems that there are no updates since months. Graphic is minimalist and nice but you would expect more; it seems a bit lazy and just a placeholder; instead of being proper "low poly" style. Try it for the novelty, but as game is non-existant.

Charming, unplayable game

I bought Jalopy in Early Access and was eager for a full release. It was game-breakingly buggy but charming. I recently played it again after release and am disappointed by the overwhelming amount of bugs still present in the game, making it impossible for me to continue after reaching the first city: An oil can was constantly stuck in the left hand (even while driving and after sleeping) and unable to be selected or dropped. This limited the number of items that could be carried to two After two unboxings, I was unable to remove tape from any more boxes, making it impossible to install certain upgrades and earn money All fuel cans became stuck at one bar of fuel and could only be fueled up one unit before fueling the car by one unit. After a few times going back and forth trying to fuel the car, it broke entirely and I also wasn't able to add oil It's a shame that the game is still broken

Unstable Brilliance

This is a brilliant if somewhat unusual game. You spend your time driving around Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Your car is terrible, but if you care for it and take what you need (Repair kits, fuel, etc...) you won't have to constantly worry about it breaking down. You'll find random boxes of stuff lying by the roadside, and if you have enough room in your car, you can take them with you to sell. I once collected about 2000 marks worth (Which is a lot!) of wine, but when I got to the border crossing, I realised that the country I was trying to get into had banned alcohol. I wasn't about to leave 2 grand of wine lying on the roadside, so I had to smuggle it across. And it worked! So why isn't this game 5/5? Because it's the least stable 1.0 I've ever played, it crashes constantly at random points and if I was the sort of person who'd get bored driving again it'd be 1 star. As it is though I don't mind to much because it just means I get another adventure right?

Ich liebe meinen Laika

Imagine you were playing Oregon Trail, but travelling across Eastern Europe. Instead of a covered wagon, you have a ramshackle East German Laika (It's called that because it's like a Trabant, but isn't). And instead of managing hunger and dysentery, you're worrying about how much petrol you have, and fixing flat tyres and smoking engines. This is Jalopy. You drive from Berlin to Istanbul over a number of stages, stopping in a new city each night to spend the night in a cheap motel. Along the way you find boxes along the roadside that must've fallen off the back of a truck: but no matter, you can sell the goods you find inside to make money. Of course all the money you make quickly goes back into upgrades for your car, or motel fees, or—if you're not careful about what goods you take across a border, and get unlucky while being searched—fines for smuggling. Dodge potholes and puddles. Drive through the day and night; through rain and fog; under sunny skies or clouds; up mountains, along highways, around twisty coastal roads, past collapsed bridges, waterfalls, derelict cars (which you can scavenge for parts), through flooded roads or simply muddy ones. The interaction detail in this game is amazing: you interact with every part of your car: from replacing engine parts, to using the radio, wipers, hazard lights. Packing items into the boot, stacking them on the roof rack, or carrying an armful of goods to sell at the shop. Use the jack and tyre iron to change tyres. Use a bucket and sponge to clean the mud off your car. There are bugs, but they're rarely game-breaking. At worst I've had to save and reload to restart the stage from the motel that morning, losing only a little progress. A single trip from Berlin to Istanbul will take you between six to eight hours (depending on the routes you choose). You could call the game done once you reach Istanbul—or you could challenge yourself to make it all the way back home again. This is a gorgeous little game.

Unfortunately, it's just bad

I really wanted to like Jalopy. The concept seemed great. Travel through europe in a beat-up Soviet car. Drive through scenic backroads. Stop at quaint cities and gas stop. Learn about Zen and the Art of Crapsack Car Maintenance. Sterling stuff. For someone whose favourite activity in GTA games is driving aimlessly through dirt roads and who holds Spintires (even the original one) in very high regard, this game seemed to be godsent. Yet it turns driving into a boring, humourless activity. (Which I guess it is, but that's why I play games about driving instead of driving.) There's a bizarre economy in which 'the road provides'. You need to find out boxes in the road and bring them to shops to sell them. But you have a tiny space in your trunk to carry them, space that is certainly not enough to bring the fuel, oil and repair tools you need to keep going - especially since the placement of objects in your trunk is automatic, and you'll usually have to keep taking them in and out until the game realizes everything does fit. This means your car will eventually break down, and if you're lucky you'll have to slug through the next section of the road at 20KPH; if you're unlucky, your car will be stuck there and you'll have no way to proceed other than saving and quitting, which returns you to the last city you visited. But it also saves your car's state, so the fuel you spent and the degradation of your car parts remain; if you don't have money to repair them you'll likely have to restart. The game is also very glitchy. Parts disappear. The car gets stuck. I once parked too near a wall and couldn't get back into the car. The only story there is consists of reading documents your uncle keeps in his briefcase while he sleeps - but he often gets stuck outside the motel, so you can't do that. That's the sad state of the game. There's a lot of potential, but it's unrealized. I really hope someone, someday, creates the game Jalopy could have been. Jalopy, sadly, isn't it.
