Description

IXION combines city building, survival elements and exploration, into a thrilling space opera as you explore the stars. Propelled onwards through a perilous journey, you are the Administrator of the Tiqqun space station, charged with finding a new home for humanity.

Keeping the station sound and flying will require a deft hand and strategic thinking, as you are constantly pulled between maintaining hull integrity, bringing in new resources and managing power consumption.

What choices will you make when confronted with impending disaster? What will you discover out there in the dark?

A population to manage, survivors to find, cryopods to recover... Maintain your crew's trust in the corporation that started this venture, or face failure and mutiny. Six sectors can be unlocked within the station, each able to house more population, support new jobs, and provide opportunity to monitor the crew with the Data Listening System. Will you bring hope to the people?

Who said DOLOS was the only faction to escape the fate of the Earth? Brush up against other pockets of survivors, navigate on from the failures and wrecks of others… IXION will lead the player through gripping chapters of story, where new threats and opportunities are presented, all in aid of reaching the final destination, a new home.

DOLOS are famed for their innovative technology, their scientists, but the Tiqqun now finds itself cut off. Find what resources you can, research what you do not have. Find new ways to provide for your settlement, construct new buildings to create what’s needed. Modify the Tiqqun station, improve it, forge ahead in this odyssey.

Space is a dangerous place. Hull breaches, overloaded power supplies, electrical fires... It is up to you to manage these risks, deal with emergencies, create backup power solutions, and enable Extra Vehicular Activity…

There are whole new stellar maps to explore. Send out probes to reveal what’s hidden, create mining and cargo ships to find resources, commission science expeditions to discover the secrets and threats you’ll find out there in space. Encounter other survivors and bring them into the fold of your mission, objective - survive.

Intersting core, infuriating QoL

If I had to describe this game in one senctence, it would be a puzzle/adventure game disguised as a survival city-builder. The core premise of the game is interesting, but there's a lot to dislike about it. To start with the good, it's a great resource management game. It costs resources just to survive and move around. You have to balance physical resources, workforce, space, and time. Opening sectors too soon can doom you. Growing population too fast can doom you. Growing population too slow can doom you. There are lots of ways to fail, some predictable, and some surprising, and I mean surprising in a bad way. This game is very prone to death spirals, where you get into some problem and there's no way out without loading an earlier save. There's a heap of things to dislike: * The exploration choices are the same every time, and in game it doesn't tell you the outcome. So either save scum, look up the outcomes on the internet, or just live with "surprise, you picked wrong!". The game should either have some RNG or just tell you what each choice does. * Not great QoL. You will constantly have to micromonage your little ships, your resource thresholds, and waste management. * In game information is stingy. You don't get hard numbers about the stats of many buildings. * Lots of undocumented behaviour quirks on buildings. * Many stat screens you expect from a city builder in the 2020s are missing. No production surplus/deficit summary. No workforce allocation screen. * For a game about resource scarcity, it's a bit too easy to create a resource positive feedback loop, removing most of the time pressure. * Generally it seems to throw surprises at you that you should have been doing something about a few hours ago. Overall I was invested enough to finish the game, but was getting annoyed with the busywork distracting from the meaningful gameplay choices. This game made me want to go play Frostpunk or Factorio instead.

Startopia still unbeatable

I'll add to some not so good but very reliable opinions out there. Illogical events and forced decisions to be made. Constant and too much chaotic clicking all around, back and forth from base upgrading to sending probes. Illogical "industry" like steel production from ore in space with onboard power from solar panels and so low power consumption with no oxygen consumpion, no heat - that's magic not scifi. Startopia 1 is still the first and the best of space station sims.

A slightly flawed gem.

Ixion is one of my favourite games ever but it can be somewhat hard to tackle at first, actually bounced off it two times, it wasn't until my third try that it truly hooked me and then I couldn't get get enough. The narrative is deep and extremely good, the gameplay loop is tight and unique, the soundtrack is top notch. It is not without its flaws but I strongly encourage anybody to give this one a try or maybe three.

A few reviews mistake features as flaws

It's a harsh survival civ sim. I played a demo, had my socks well and truly blown off, and immediately pre-ordered the full game I think a full year in advance of release (on Steam, pre-orders don't come out so far in advance here unfortunately). I wasn't disappointed. Absolutely amazing. Release day (and the next few days) I barely slept. I shirked responsibilities because time disappeared while playing. Things go wrong, that's kind of the whole point. It IS punishing. Apparently the latest update gives more difficulty options, but honestly I don't think it needs them. For most game genres, I hate a slog, but for some reason games like these just aren't the same without being terribly punishing. Play from save to save or take each blow on the chin, your choice. The story isn't exactly deep. It's not shallow either, mind you. It's precisely what's needed to push you through and encourage you to try new things while weighing up the cost/benefit of every metaphorical roll of the dice. I'm pretty sure I haven't found every secret nook or cranny, and it's been top of my playlist for a year and a half plus change.

To me... Amazing

I love this game. Normally I play FPS, squad type strategy, some RPGs. Ixion looked really interesting (mainly the setting for me) and I am so glad I tried it. Like other reviewers. I lose track of time in this. Super chill gameplay. I am not a city builder type gamer at all. At first boot I was a tad overwhelmed but just went forward with the intro. I found it really intuitive. I made a couple of newb mistakes but I haven't reloaded to an earleir save yet. Although I am only 8 hours in. Some valuable info is needlessly difficult to locate but it is all there if you explore the vaious menus. I encountered a few bugs, mainly my science ship at times won't collect science. I just give it a different destination and as soon as it moves I change the movement back to the original location. Amazing game, I highly recommend it. Such a relaxing experience for a gamer like myself who doesn't normally play these.
