3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Welcome to ION FURY!

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!

A Return to Form? An Elevation.

Ion Fury is a game of passion and borderline master craft. Combat is slick and full of energy. Weapons are satisfying with tight bullet spread, perfectly tuned audio/visual feedback, with headshots adding a refreshing degree of precision to the Build formula. Enemies are plentiful. Machine gunning fodder, shotgun rushers, devastating crossbow snipers, and more grotesque creations to discover. Fearsome enforcers of their cyber crusade turn into the many victims of YOUR justice charged rampage; or your spilled drink revengeance whichever you prefer. The battlefield is adored with a spectacular level of detail. Full of alternate routes, juicy splashes of coloured light, scene setting props, secrets, and an impressive implementation of verticality insure your virgin and repeat playthroughs are rich with exploration and visual wonder. I'm no music theory major, but the tracks accompanying this game set the tone and pace of the scene so perfectly with their energetic beats. Wish there was more I could say. I'd recommend your check out the soundtrack for yourself if you want to know more. I'd recommend you start on the highest difficulty, Maximum Fury, right from the start. Sharpening my skill and really solidifying my combat confidence throughout this game was beyond gratifying. Anyways, Damn Iron Maiden and their representatives for legal strong-arming these Devs into changing the game's name mere weeks before release. Damn this obnoxious, basically fucking pointless controversy that muddies what should be Ion Fury's honeymoon period. Censorship is disgusting no matter how small, and I hope Voidpoint will stand up for themselves and refrain from making any alterations. But I will not downplay team's achievements in protest, and let this game play second fiddle to fucking soap bottle with the word "gay" on it. I love Ion Fury, and the name is growing on me.

Fantastic

Luckily, the developer walked back their decision to censor the game. And this game is absolutely fantastic. It's fast, the graphics are perfect; sound; humor - everything is done right. I am 100% happy with the money I spent to get this and hope they continue to release titles like this; and with the amount of work plainly invested into it's developement.

A new Build engine classic!

Ion Fury is a game that was well worth waiting for. Strong level design with highly detailed environments, an arsenal that has no bad weapons, vast numbers of secrets to discover (many of them creative in how you access them), and fitting voice actors whose efforts breathe life into Bombshell and the main villain. It's one hell of a game. There are a few weak points from my perspective: 1. Many maps later in the game aren't as satisfying as those in earlier zones. I couldn't get enough of the early urban maps - which are easily the best in the game - but later on the player is stuck in one underground facility after another with rare exceptions such as the first map of zone five, which was a breath of fresh air. Sadly, the next map sends you right back underground. 2. Performance was poor in some areas, particularly some of the boss battles where enormous numbers of explosions and the like could drastically reduce frame rate. Thankfully these occasions were rare. 3. The selection of enemies is a bit lacking in variety. The game slowly rolls out new types of hostile as the player progresses, but not quite enough of them to keep you wondering what new horror may lurk in the next map or zone. Just a few more enemy types could have gone a long way. 4. The highest difficulty, Maximum Fury, seemed easier than it should have been. While the numbers of enemies felt about right, the amount of health and ammo made available to the player never left you feeling vulnerable for long. Fifteen to twenty percent less ammo alone would put more pressure on the player by forcing the use of more weapons in more situations rather than sticking with their favorites that rarely run low. Despite these flaws, Ion Fury is one of the best FPS games to be released in a long time and is possibly the best Build shooter in history. I hope 3D Realms and Voidpoint release more games using this legendary engine in the future.

Works fine, Censorship is bad

Great game. Even better that it has made people upset, just like the good old days of Duke Nukem and Lo Wang.

Initial Bombshell. Fantastic Blast.

Please, those of you who voted down the game, please update your reviews as the developers have listened. I was upset as well and am glad that things have prevailed against censorship so please update your reviews to reflect this. I'm not trying to order, simply asking that people who were upset with the censorship go read their statement for yourself and change your review accordingly. The game is more than just a nostalgic trip into a good old FPS of the 90s. It's incredibly faithful and is all on its own a serious contender for being one of the greats. The gameplay is more than solid, the music and sounds in the game are bombastic and you feel good dunking on the enemies in the game. Each of the weapons are fantastic and feel the right amount of powerful. Shelly herself comes across as a badass and they don't waste too much time with the narrative, instead, they let Shelly's Lover Boy revolver do the talking which is great, I really like her, even if her dialogue is cheesey, it's the right kind of cheese. I really want more from 3D realms, give us a winter set 3D realms! Please keep making awesome games, I still love the heck out of games like this, this is one of the best FPS games I've played in a long while. You guys still got it and it shows here. I hope people who were initially upset will appreciate the developers change and stick with them. People make mistakes but, they did right in the end and that's all that matters. I want to stick with them going forward, as long as they don't pull any future BS we're cool. Thanks for reading fellow gamers, cheers.
