3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.

Welcome to ION FURY!

Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.

Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.

Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.

Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
  • The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
  • Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
  • Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
  • 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
  • Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
  • Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
  • Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
  • True tracked module music!
  • Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
  • Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!

Great retro shooter with glaring flaw

Playing Ion Fury feels great, and it truly deserves the "retro shooter" designation as it just all feels so very tight and satisfying to play with some modern conveniences as added bonus. Great level design, fun shootouts, silly quips, and loads of secrets. The one thing that marred the game for me were the boss fights though. They always ended up being too much of a painful chore as Shelly not only has to fight the boss but also an accompanying onslaught of minions for almost every one of these, which can easily overwhelm the player in quick order. It's just more frustrating than challenging being killed the upteenth time from the sidelines because it can be tough to keep track of them all.

90s live again

In a nutshell: Ion Fury has a nice colourful artstyle, great sound and music, very satisfying weaponry, and awesome level design. If you have any love for old school shooters (particularly Build engine games like Blood, Duke3d, Shadow Warrior), you owe it to yourself to play this. It's a blast from beginning to end.

very nice

good graphics great gameplay good music maps are very well done. no bugs encountered whatsoever the pistol is surprisingly very useful. it kills regular goons reasonably fast and the alt fire helps a lot against the flying drones. usually in these types of shooters the pistol is used to get anything else. i expect dlc's or even a new chapter. only complaint is the humor and jokes are not funny, at least for me.

A perfect representative of its genre

So far I have finished the first "episode" of Ion Fury, as well as a few levels of the next one... and I just can't get bored with this game! This is very important, because it proves that the basic "gameplay loop" is rock solid and its repetitiveness is not a flaw, but an asset - you will want more of it. Guns are very satisfactory to fire and so far all levels have been very characteristic in their design and appealing. Of course, everything is "sprinkled" with a healthy dose of easter eggs, pop-cultural references and "tough girl" one-liners uttered by Shelly. For me, Ion Fury is a perfect example of what I expect from modern "boomer shooters". I highly recommend it to all fans of the genre.

It rocks.

If you've ever played Duke Nukem 3D, Blood One Unit Whole, or Shadow Warrior and thought, 'yeah, I want MORE of that' then look no further. This game uses the Build Engine and takes it to a level you wouldn't believe was possible. Environments are high res voxels items in the world like light switches, doors, and door locks are fully animated and voxeled to DEATH. Very, very cool stuff! The environments are colorful and neon. The combat is slightly faster paced than you might be used to in classic shooters but strafing and using cover to fight works well. There will come several moments in the game where it will 'encourage' you to main explosive weapons and I definitely appreciated it. No matter how far in you get, you'll not have a dull moment. As a bonus, for anyone who grew up playing games and watching movies in the 90s (and 80s) you're in for a fun surprise. Dont want to give anything away but many game franchises, movies, and even music are referenced in this game in some form or another so keep an eye (and an ear) out for them. 90s gamers will definitely feel seen in this game. Overall I can recommend this to anyone who's into classic shooters or who've wanted to give them a try. Go For It.
