Interstate ’76® The Arsenal

"Interstate 76" is a classic car combat game which (sadly) has never been remade to this day. If you want to experience a true classic game with great 70s atmosphere, that´s the game for you. The GOG version sady is an unplayable state. However, these problems can be solved with a few measures. You just have to invest about 10-15 minutes of your time: - This game offers some great 70s music. The music is still there in the game folder, but, since this was CD music (the music was playing right from the game CD in your CD-Rom drive), there is NO workaround to play the game with music. Maybe future patches will help here. It´s sad, because the music enriches the atmosphere a lot. - This game runs with low fps (about 25). DO NOT CHANGE, otherwise is breaks the game physics. - In order to run the game (Windows 10), you need the AiO-Patch, which can be found here: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1349-interstate-76-nitro-pack-aio-patch/ Follow the instructions in the readme file and replace the files in your game folder. Without this patch I wasn´t able to start the game at all (Win 10 64 Bit). It contains a lot of bugfixes as well! - Yes, this game can be run in 3DFX and HD, just read the tipps from krissebesta (below). However, for me, this caused a lot of problems like textures popping up in wrong spots etc. Therefore I ran the game wihout Glide-Support and without widescreen. No problems here at all! Even feels a little bit like retro without 3DFX-support... Back then I never played the 3DFX-Version, so I prefer the non-3DFX-version. - After mission 12 (car jump) the game crashes if you click on "next level / mission". I did some research and found the (simple) solution on the internet. It´s caused by the I76SHELL.DLL. There are two of these DLL files in the folder I76SHELL.DLL and I76SHELL_1083.DLL. Just rename I76SHELL.DLL to I76SHELL_old.dll and I76SHELL_1083.DLL to I76SHELL.DLL and voila, you will be able to continue to mission 13.

Most of the older reviews seem to be about it not working correctly on Windows 7 or modern hardware. Not sure when but as of now it definitely works fine on Windows 7 on my i5 3.4GHz/Geforce 560 combo. Just figured I'd post my experience so it doesn't scare people away from this absolute classic.

I would love to give this game 5 stars, the game itself deserves it. However, this particular product has not been updated to work on modern hardware and requires a lot of digging online to figure out a way to cap the frame rate so that it you can complete mission 5. You will have a blast all the way up to the jump in mission 5, and then you’ll be crushed as you realize it is impossible to complete due to this problem. There are people posting solutions, but none of them work for me and quite frankly GOG needs to package this game with the fix implemented like they did with Blade Runner. Will change my review once it is fixed.

Interstate 76 is an awesome game (easily 5/5 stars) but GOG was very lazy with this one. I cannot recommend buying this game because GOG didn't even bother to optimize it for modern systems at all, making the game virtually unplayable. The wrappers and patches available either don't work or end up creating new problems. I'm just about done trying to make this game work. I'm seriously disappointed in you GOG. 1 star.

I loved Interestate '76 years ago when it first released, and of course seeing it here I wanted to play it again. Unfortunately, it's not "out of the box" playable here on GOG. As such it should be removed from the store, or AT VERY LEAST warn people that it won't work anymore. As you can see from other reviews from 10 years ago this was a problem, but I didn't listen to them. So don't make the same mistake I did. I'll also just add that there is a patch out there called "Nitro AiO patch" that adds a TON of fixes to Interstate '76 to include modern OS compatibility along with widescreen/native resolution support, and was made by a fan/modder/programmer. He reached out to GOG to ensure it was compatible with their version of Interstate '76, and never got a reply back from GOG. Now there's a great patch out there, and we as GOG users can't use it because GOG dropped the ball. In reality this game should be playable by modern OS's and systems from their store, and require little to no tinkering by the user as most people aren't knowledgeable in that manner. Anyway, it pains me to say it, but stay away from this one because it won't work, and so is a waste of money.
