Play through the first few hours of the game and enjoy the neat rogue-like deckbuilder experience whilst it lasts: it's not comming back. There's a dramatic spike in difficulty som 10-ish hours into the game, and whilsts I'm sure someone can be bothered to write an article about how it reflects the story's progression, it doesn't really change the fact that the game went from balanced to suddenly shoving you off your high horse and into the mud.
8/10, play the first 10 hours, leave the game and don't look back
Daniel Mullins is a game creator at some kind of a peak. and i thought he gave enough when he made Pony Island, a game that everybody should play. I finished it for the first time and i have seen some kind of an ending. But with a Mullins game I am never really sure, if I did finish it. Or maybe I just got sample of the first act and only on NG+4 will I get the real real ending. It's both scary and great. To which i I say, just forget your instincts, and touch the new option that has just opened up. Let the creator take you on a journey like no other. Through the medium and as meta as you can get. Pony Island was a perfect game. For me it was. The Hex jumped around so much that it wore me down. And now we have Inscryption and we will try to talk about it in 5 years and we will still be pretty clueless. Because the mind of a Mullins will break you and bend you and you will think about these games when you really think about the power of video games and the medium's possibilities.
I was a fan. But after 4 hours i was unbiased and tired of building my deck. A wall. No progression. But then i learned to exploit it (with the cards i had created after every defeat). BEAR, 1 blood, 7 and 7. And this would have been a great card game. But i don't think he understands simple or straightforward. Or anything less than experimental. Always risking to tell a bigger story. And we will be talking about these games and Daniel Mullins with the greatest reverence because he is actually trying to do something special. And he is succeeding. A great artist who is trying to make his piece. You will not be disappointed in Inscryption. But your brain may hurt and you will see the same themes repeating. And still it deserves both the praise and the hype (a big thank you to Sterling for reviewing Pony Island and giving it some much needed attention).
Sacrifices: you will learn it at first, you will learn to exploit them, but then in the end it will not matter because the game is ... itself.
the storytelling and feel of this game is great. first act is by far my favorite. i had to take a week away from it after hitting act 2. but once i came back i was hooked till i finsished the whole thing. plan to play through it many more times. difficulty is solely your choice, the game always gives you access to overpowered something or others, or options to make overpowered stuff. which i find great as i was untouchable by the end of game, next run ill probably try to challenge myself more and learn the other non act 1 decks. i highly recommend this to anyone who likes to stimulate their brain a little. and if youre one of the folks who cant sleep after a scary movie, id play mostly in the daytime.
Lots of surprises, well made and interesting ones too. Endless mode does exist on the GOG version that adds more replayability and optional challenges to work on and unlock. Gameplay itself will not feel insanely innovative but its not bland and copying other card games either. It definitely has its own style game wise and the visuals reinforce a lot of it well.
Highly recommend if you like games that have stories with mysteries, card games with good play and challenges, and a darker visual tone albeit with humor and goofy tones at times.
