Description
Ultherst was once a peaceful, God-fearing land until the Three Scourges of God came to pass as foretold by Saint Ezekiel, one of the twelve followers of the First Prophet. First came the famine that devasted the populace. Next came the plague that added more unfortunate souls on Death’s abacus. Finally came the great rain of fire, and death fell down on sinner and innocent alike, blood flooding the streets in place of water. The people, in their desperation, turned away from the Holy Mother Church and delved deep into pagan decadence or succumbed to the temptation of the Devil. You have been charged with the office of Inquisitor. It is up to you to investigate crimes against the one true faith and root out heresy--using any and all means necessary. As in all best computer RPGs--the most important choices are yours to make.

Inquisitor is a unique blend of action-oriented combat with a deep and involving tale of betrayal, torture, madness, and infernal damnation. Put your wits to the test as you collect evidence against possible heretics and put them to trial once they have been charged. Use the might of the Inquisition to extract a confession from your subjects, but be warned, use your power wisely or you will face the consequences. If a gritty old-school open-ended isometric RPG is what you looking for, look no further. Inquisitor will provide you with hours of gameplay and a dark, involving story.
  • Three character classes--Paladin, Priest, and Thief--each with his own unique and independent story.
  • Wield the power of the Inquisition as you arrest heretics; use a variety of tools-such as the iron maiden, suspension, and the rack-to extract confessions and burn the heretics!
  • A wide, open-ended world for you to explore and exploit as you see fit.
  • More than 200 weapons, 80 spells, and 7 schools of forbidden and allowed magic!

Stupidly, impossibly hard.

I get that they were going for 'oldschool' and 'challenging', but what you end up with is an unplayable, poorly-designed mess. Other reviews go into detail about the specifics-- the glaring mistake of the Stamina system, the "might as well reload" status effects, etc.-- and suffice to say I agree with them. You can cheat a character up to level 100 with endgame equipment and still end up punked by Act-1 enemies. Bonus badness: The English translation is kind of garbage. You'll understand what people are saying most of the time, but man oh man, be ready for some awkard syntax. The one saving grace is the concept and some of the quest design-- gathering evidence and conducting interrogations as an Inquisitor is a neat idea. The fact that you go about it by reading through reams and reams of awkwardly translated dialogue, most of which involves characters saying almost the exact same thing, keeps this from shining through. Well, that and the fact that you won't get to see much of it since you'll be too busy getting killed.

Long quest, no hand holding!

If you go digging, you'll find a lot of hate out there for this game, but I liked it. The main complaints are the difficulty level, poor graphics, and the rigid combat system. Here's my take: Difficulty: The game doesn't hold your hand, period. There is never a giant arrow pointing where you should go next; rather, you'll need to talk with people. Lots of people. Most of what they say will be worthless, and some may even be repetitive.I like this, actually. It helps with immersion (which is a big thing with me) and the fact that it was translated from Czech adds flavor to the dialogue (the game's setting takes place in Old World, which is like 14th century Europe). The game is estimated to run about 100 hours, and massive walls of text are a big reason why (there's even a 76 page novella included in the extras!). If this is not your thing, you should avoid Inquisitor. Graphics: Again, I think they add to the feel of the game. The palette is full of dark, muted colors, and everything looks as if it has just rained in autumn: dreary. Works for me! Combat system: It is what it is. There's not a whole lot of flexibility, and you really do start off feeling weak. You'll probably suck down more pots in Inquisitor than in any other rpg. It's not a game breaker for me. I like that every character build can use magic, but you *want* to get Levitation. I think it's worth getting. The setting is original, and it's obvious the devs were trying for something special.

Not very good

The other reviews have gone into this, but the problem is that it's not great as a game. The art direction is great, and you can see what the designers were going for and the idea is brilliant. The problem is that this is a Diablo like where the combat sucks, largely because melee is unresponsive and you'll rapidly start getting swarmed by some very powerful enemies that you can only beat by cheesing them. The game is incredibly text heavy and most of it is completely pointless. The idea is good, but you'll rapidly get annoyed by talking to a character, reading 20 pages of basically nothing, only to talk to the next character and getting another 20 pages. There might be one clue somewhere in there but you'll rapidly start glazing over the actual text written down and just scan text, then scan conversation options. Gameplay wise, the walk speed is slow, which rapidly gets annoying and there are sections where you can only progress by having one specific spell that you won't know about ahead of time. if you have too many levels and not enough remaining skill points to make the spell castable, you'll need to restart the game from scratch.

The game I spent more hours on GOG in

I loved this game from the moment I saw the first screenshots, months before it has been published. I spent inside it uncountable hours trying to find a way to survive through the intricate dungeons. At the time, I also realized a "guide" for all the dungeons, maybe there is no more trace of it today, sadly. It is no perfect game, absolutely. But there is some "magic" inside it, a magic that comes from the past, originating from the love for the best isometric WRPGs.

Great concept if you have the patience

The story line is very interesting, and the game has a wonderful dark theme to it. You are indeed an inquisitor using everything from charity and persuasion, to intimidation and torture, to root out heretics. The feel of it is relatively untainted by modernity, as the heretics really are a threat to the townspeople, as they ally themselves with demons and witches and the like. The difficult and sometimes tedious gameplay is worth it for that. But that brings me to the tedious gameplay. I don't mind the difficulty. That at first you have to kill simple bats for a while to build of XP - that's fine. I like that you can't take on big monsters at first, and often have to flee until you are stronger. But the dungeons are needlessly tedious! There's so much cheap loot, that you have to make trip after trip to unload it. You might want to leave it behind, but you find you actually need the money (unless you save scum at gambling). With the deeper dungeons, you get further down, then have to make that long trip back up, where monsters keep spawning even though you killed them all, and buy more and more potions to survive just a little further. As you go back down, monsters have respawned yet again, and you keep going through more and more healing potions to get just a little further, and then make that long trip back up, again! To the writers, I love what you're trying to do here, but take a tip from Diablo. 3 words - town portal scrolls. It would make the game so much more playable. I'm all for a challenging game. I'm not for a game that's difficult simply because you have to have the patience to go back, and fourth, and back, and fourth, getting more and more potions, selling more and more cheap loot to buy the potions, etc. It's a shame. It really spoils and otherwise awesome game! Love the torture, by the way! Love it!
