Get Freespace 2 instead.
Independence war is proof that when vidoegames try to emulate the world too much they stop being fun. As much as people like to insult the "WW2 space sim dogfighter" (i.e. wing commander, freespace, freelancer) even worst 'ww2' dogfight space-sim is better then independence war by miles. Those giving positive reviews are braindead or are just weird nerds with a fetish for figuring out overly complex stuff that is badly designed and think that this is 'fun'.

A Classic but impossible space sim
groundbreaking space sim from the early 2000s but is completely too hard for any regular player. I've played through the game multiple times, but only by using cheat-codes to get through. Its that hard. Anyone that claims to have passed all the missions with never using a cheat code or mod is lying.
