This game is what made me fall in love with space. I have bought it five times to date and would not hesitate buying it another five. It is the best space simulator released to date and only Star Citizen stands a chance to take its crown.
I bought this because it was on sale. But this gave me the perfect excuse to get my flight stick out again (Thrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner II) and it works perfect. There are no configurable keybindings because if you play with a great joystick you don't need any.
It works so good it should be a bundle.
The game itself is quite hard though. Most of the flying can be done on autopilot but the enemy weapons are a lot stronger than yours from the start so if you don't know how to maximize power to shields you're toast from the first battle.
The amount of time I have spent in this universe is mind boggling. Sure, its difficult, and while there is a tutorial, it doesn't do a ton to hold your hand while you are literally thrust (as a character in the story and player) into the universe. But my, what a compelling universe it is.
I actually still have the disks and the manual from when I first bought it, and load it up every now and again - probably played through 3-4 times. While the story stays the same (incredible btw), all the little things that happen along the way - pirating, trading, fighting, the random huge space battles occuring around stations between warring factions, make the game really engaging.
The engine, in my opinion, still looks great.
I know it sounds like im just blowing the game (which I am), but its really pretty amazing. Buy it. You'd be hard pressed to find a better $6
This was the 1st space slight trader sims I ever played and I was hooked!
I've tried many older games after but the graphics weren't up to par, and i've tried some of the newer games and they didn't have that flair of this game. This is definitely in my top 5 space flight sims.
It's a perfect mix of newer graphics and good game design.
This looking for that latest graphics with the fun i remember playing this game. (x3 has no emotion, story)
I'v played most if not all of the space combat/trade sims out there, dating back to 'Elite' on the Amiga. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I wanted to give this game a go.. It at first reminded me of Freelancer but i found the control mechanism to be unplayable beyond reason..
FL had a good control technique, as did Frontier Elite 2 along with the 'X' series, X2 the threat for example.
I only managed to get about half way through, the story was engaging and decent, most of the time it was the only thing that kept me playing, despite the frustrating mission difficulty.
An ambitious title that falls way short of the mark, but for any hardcore space sim fan out there, it wouldn't hurt for a few dollars.
I'd reccomend checking out Elite and Elite 2, along with Freelancer and some of the X series, as they are great games, worthy to be on GOG no doubt. Also (cheesy name but) Space Rangers 2 Rise of The Dominators is a great game.. I'd put them before this title for sure
