Wonderful game, bad version

Imperium Galactica 2 is a game that deserves 5 stars, it's an exemplar of the 4X genre with the different 'levels' of play (planetside micromanagement & battle, space battle, tech & economy) and has great atmosphere and interesting (though not epic) storylines/quests. Unfortunately as other reviewers have mentioned, GOG didn't procure the proper version. Rather, they appear to have some strange kind of port. Missing button-icons one can live with, but missing audio (speech) detracts greatly from the experience, and the time/speed hotkeys are absolutely essential and without them gameplay is much clunkier than it was 20 years ago... I have dug up my old CD-ROMs (there were 4) for this game, and with some trouble and tinkering it's still possible to get that to work on modern systems. So I'll be sticking to that for now, much though I'd have liked to support this game being on GOG and to have a version that works with no tinkering using an installer, etc. A pity, but if you truly want to experience this great game in its glory, give this version a miss.

Yisssssssssssss

I was so excited when I saw the first Imperium Galactica pop up for sale here, wondering if and when they would get #2, which is by far and away the superior game. Graphics: 8/10 Audio: 6/10 (but who listens to in-game audio?) Gameplay: 9/10 This is one of the most in-depth strategy games ever made. It has 3 "main" playable races/ 3 campaigns, but a number more races you can play in the sandbox or challenge scenarios. The gameplay is your standard 4X fare, but with a real ability (or in some cases ONLY the ability) to succeed through trade, espionage, or betrayal. The graphics have significant staying power for a game that's now 19 years old (*sobs*), easily keeping up with current 4X games by nature of being top-down. The planet-assault gameplay in ImGal2 is the ONLY I've ever enjoyed in a 4X game; normally it's either just flat sprites against a fixed backdrop, or a number counter, or something of the like. In ImGal2, you actually deploy your tanks, then control them in the *actual* city. If you blow up buildings, you'll have to repair them once you take the city, etc. The spying is awesome. I remember a couple times I managed to sabotage an enemy battleship just before a fleet battle, and that likely made the difference in me winning. You can assassinate leaders, sabotage ships, buildings, or tanks, hunt enemy spies, incite revolts, run counterintelligence, or just send your spies to spy summer camp for some training. Did I mention that you can hire spies of various races, and use them to better/worse effect depending on who you send them against? Yeah. It's awesome. The random events are awesome too. In most games, stuff happens like, "a meteor hit". In ImGal2, it's like, "this alien race needs you to send in tanks to destroy this building being held by terrorists on their planet because they have a virus that's lethal to them but doesn't affect your species." Then you actually assemble a tank squad and go drop them in and blow up this building. THEN, afterwards, you can either return the planet to them, or declare it your's. This was released on iOS and Android maybe 2 years ago now, and ever since then I've been pining for a proper PC digital release. So glad it's finally here!

left-right scrolling requires workaround

While the game is a good game i heavily dislike it when basic things like scrolling left and right by moving the mouse the left / right side of the screen do not work. I'm absolutely sure it worked in the original game. What i also dislike are all this reviews who discribe how the game was in their past oviously without even starting the game. I will adapt the review if the issue gets fixed.

Not for the faint of heart.

Imperium Galactica 2 is to RTS what Master of Orion 2 is to TBS, a classic and one of the best. It manages to execute so many things right that many games today still struggle with. Starting from the top then, you have three very different campaigns available, a number of scenarios, and the ability to play in sand-box mode. This is a game from a time when releases were pretty much complete from the get-go and didn’t rely on numerous expansion packs or DLC’s to actually present a finished product. The strategic depth of the game is outstanding! They managed to take a map with 70-80 systems total and make it feel like a huge galaxy as you literally have to scout every square inch of the map to find those systems. Speed and range were also executed in a clever manner that adds to the strategic depth. Colony development is similar to a city sim game, you have dozens of buildings available which all require energy and population to run. The population however, must be kept happy and healthy with recreational facilities, hospitals, police stations etc. Here the game shines as each colony is carefully crafted and grown throughout the game. The tech trees are different for each race and truly huge as they are divided into three areas (ships, ground forces, and buildings) and further subdivided at each level. Ground combat is also exceptional as it is just as detailed as space combat. There are many units the player can field and upgrade. One of the coolest features in both ground and space combat is that you can actually give orders to each unit or a group of them. This means you can have actual tactical control that matters… in an RTS! Where this game loses a star however, (and it is a product of when it was released), is that micro is quite intense in the late game and there is a lack of coherent short cuts in some areas. In conclusion, if you’re looking for a casual 4X or Strategy game, this is not for you. If on the other hand you are ready to actually be challenged with absolutely no guarantee of winning, pick it up, at this price it is the bargain of the century. (P.S. I have the original CDs and also played the Gog version which runs and plays just as well as of this time)

Still One of the Finest Space 4X Games!

There are a lot of things IG2 did back in the day that many modern games wish they could emulate. The mixture of space and planetary management. The random events. The fantastic espionage. The battles in space and on planets. The fleshed out races, and so much more. This is a truly, TRULY amazing 4X game, and you need to have it in your library if you even have the BAREST interest in the genre.
