I played the game for a night already and I can say I like it. One thing though: the tutorial is no good and the manual doesn't help much either.
To give you an example: I could not find how to restore a troop that has been damaged. There is a restore button, but it is disabled. Do I need to be in a specific place? do I need to have a specific building?
I guess i will find this out by the end of the game along with many other details, it's just that it doesn't make it easy on beginners.
If youre having crashes, make sure to manually install DirectX 9. We tend to foget that games have software requirements or are too used to them being installed automatically with the game. Having installed it I didnt have a single crash afterwards.
Now unto the game.
The game came out between Rome and Medieval 2 Total War and is also a mix of turn based strategic map and real time tactical combat.
On a conceptual level, there are things that I like and wish were used in TW. The more varied resource mechanics, the officer system for moving armies, trade routes, some diplomatic possibilities.
However, the game is marred with issues that make it an inferior product to the TW games.
The restrictive province development system, weird AI behaviour, strange balancing both in combat and on the campaign map (gun fire is much less efficient than melee), clunky and underdeveloped battle controls, no battle speed options (although there is a pause), slow gameplay start requiring quite a bit of development and preparation, smaller in scope than the TW games, there is no morale system during battles which makes it more arcady.
They did have naval warfare before the TW series and it looks interesting, although I didnt get a chance to try it.
Trying it out now I kind of understand why it was overshadowed. Despite some interesting ideas it underperforms in most categories compared to its direct competitor at that point. I guess they wanted to try a different era than the TW games of the time to make it more appealing and it makes sense. But now, if you want a game of this era, Empire and Napoleon TW are significantly superior and have much greater mod support.
I wished they would have been able to make more games like this and try and refine them. There is potential, for sure. But its a tough market. Even their direct competitor in this regard, Creative Assembly, had issues making financial gains and eventually decided to sell to SEGA.
This could've been a great game and i had high expectations about this title, until now i've liked every game made by Pyro but this one was a disappointment. Lacks a lot of features from the Total War series, bad army control, you cant group armies or make them move the way you want or other useful features, bad camera. Usually is enough to buy the chepest troops to win against more sophisticated troops. The graphics is good but not good enough, the menu desigh was rushed and the max resolution is 1024x768. But the worst thing about this game (and the reason why i have decided to write this review) are the bugs, the most annoying one is that after each battle there is 50% chance for a fatal error. Yep, spend 30 minutes in a fight than you have to start over and over again and you cant use automatic battles because the enemy will win with just a few troops against a superior army. Worst game made by Pyro.
it may not be as fancy, or as big a totalwar but the game is damn good and i have played all the total war expansions and versions. to best describe it would be ; its a combo of Risk, and its own style of Napoleonic styled RTS. theres no micro management of resources and the naval battles can be hard as hell. good graphics and overall, a game i enjoyed buying depsite my owning every TW variation. this is my second time buying this because i missed it. give it a try because yes theres always "better" out there but, "better" does not mean simple fun which why we buy at GoG anyways:) -enjoy
There exist alot of "could of" games..unfortunately this is one of them...the game is unstable and crashes after most user controlled battles...I'm at the point where I only buy games after theyve been out a year or two or three because American programmers are just throwing out trash for us to beta test before they try to sell their titles to Xbox or PS3. Gog however is a breath of fresh air I dont blame Gog just the original game manufacturers.
