Description
Hotline Miami is a high-octane action game overflowing with raw brutality, hard-boiled gunplay and skull crushing close combat. Set in an alternative 1989 Miami, you will assume the role of a mysterious antihero on a murderous rampage against the shady underworld at the behest of voices on your answering machine. Soon you'll find yourself struggling to get a grip of what is going on and why you are prone to these acts of violence.

Rely on your wits to choreograph your way through seemingly impossible situations as you constantly find yourself outnumbered by vicious enemies. The action is unrelenting and every shot is deadly so each move must be quick and decisive if you hope to survive and unveil the sinister forces driving the bloodshed. Hotline Miami’s unmistakable visual style, a driving soundtrack, and a surreal chain of events will have you question your own thirst for blood while pushing you to the limits with a brutally unforgiving challenge. Some tactical thinking required, if you don't want to die--often.
  • A surreal and gritty storyline panned out over 20 ultra-violent multi-level maps.
  • Breakneck gunplay in bloodstained neon corridors combined with an intense, pumping soundtrack.
  • Gut-wrenching battles against a bizarre cast of bosses from Miami’s underground.
  • Wield 35 different weapons - from shotguns and assault rifles to katanas and lead pipes - everything is at your disposal.

Has potential

Im going to assume you have already seen the many positive reviews or heard at least one of the many people banging on about how great this is supposed to be and just tell you the main problems i have found. 1: If you rebind the movement controls to anything on the left side of the keyboard the game wont recognize them despite allowing you to bind those keys, leaving you unable to move. (although lefties being ignored by game devs if all too common buy games) 2: The sound is painfully loud with no way to turn it down in the game, (there is a volume control for the music but not for the other sounds) meaning either physically turning your speakers down or altering the sound levels in the volume mixer if the only way to change that. 3: The flickering bright lights of the game and its UI can be painful after a short while and give you a headache. (although this is entirely subjective and won't affect everyone) Overall the main problems with the game Isn't the gameplay it is the severe lack of support for lefties and the complete non existence of any meaningful options menu.

FUN!

Its just so much fun + Simple fun yet challenging combat. Deeper than it looks + i'm not usually a fan of retro looking games but it just fits here + BEST SOUNDTRACK EVAH!!! introduced me to synthwave love it! + one of the best games to jump in for a few rounds + easy to learn difficult to master / story still makes no sense to me but i dont care xD Overall 9/10 a modern classic in every sense of the word

Frustrating, yet addictively brutal game

As someone late to the ‘Hotline Miami' hype, I was often wondering why this top-down action game that reminds me of the first ‘Grand Theft Auto’ got so much attention. So I got the game at a sale and gave it a try. Pretty soon, I was sucked into a trippy gorefest of masked assassins and gangsters. The brutality in ‘HM’ rivals that in the early ‘GTA’ games, but the game is nowhere as colourful or humourous. In fact, the art style and colour palate highlight the ugliness of the world of ‘HM’. Even with the precision of keyboard and mouse controls, ‘HM’ is challenging. Like many of your enemies, one hit from a melee weapon or a bullet is enough to kill you. The masks you earn and find throughout the game can grant you bonuses for your attacks, defense and movements. Yet in the end, it’s all about your finesse and familiarity with the game. That’s when I realized why ‘HM’ is so popular. It goads you to keep trying until you beat a level, by having you simply press R to try again. I died frequently in ‘HM’, but eventually learned the patterns of my enemies and the best masks and weapons to use. Your victories are definitely hard earned. It’s not a game you’ll breeze through – you have to get good at it. I found myself cursing at the game and at myself for failing, especially after having made much headway in a level. But the moment you finally succeed, you can feel the endorphins kick in from your achievements, despite how unpraiseworthy, brutal your actions are in the game. I get it now. Whether you can complete ‘HM’ or not, and whether or not you can get a high grade for a level doesn’t really matter. It’s the thrill of succeeding, the addictive cycle of repeated failure and brief moment of triumph, and those mindless moments of highly pixelated brutality that you commit because you’re simply told to. ‘HM’ appeals to the animal in us – I can totally understand why it got the accolades that it received.

Crazy, addictive, sometimes frustrating

That's what she said! (@johell792007) Basically I fully agree with this man/woman in the comments below. This is very good and frustrating. I had to finish it in one sitting or else... It was a bad move. My hand was injured because of constant pressure that I put while gripping keys...

Blood and gore

I think most people who play PC have stumbled upon Hotline Miami at some point. The game is great and the mechanics works really well. The story is very horror like with a lot of blood. If you can accept the gore level, it is highly recommended (by everyone, I think?).
