I am one of the many that has never been able to get this game to run. It's basically a crash upon startup. I've tried all the fix recommendations I could find, none of them work.
I didn't refund this game because I had hoped the developer would eventually address the issues with a patch (I played this on PS4 early on so I knew it was worth waiting for) but it doesn't look like that will ever happen. So I am now left holding this pointless entry in my games library as a permanent reminder to never wait again... If it is broke from day one, refund IMMEDIATELY.
A decent Gothic-like game, although it's post-cataclysmic setting is closer to the world of Elex.
I personally don't mind a female protagonist (didn't mind the male characters in Gothic, Risen, and Elex, either) but not letting the player customize the character was a flaw even back in 2001. 20 Years passed since Gothic 1, and we're still stuck with a prebuilt character.
Gothic-like games had an unfortunate tendency of becoming more and more difficult: Gothic 2 was ok (sort of), NoTR made it very hard, Risen was too difficult, Elex was a punishment. Fortunatley, the devs managed to balance the game's difficulty, making Horizon a bit more difficult than Gothic 1 and a bit easier than Gothic 2 (note that i play on easy difficulty because my computer is slow and i don't want to die because of a framerate drop. Your mileage may vary).
As mentioned earlier, Horizon, at first, may seem quite similar to Elex. I personally liked the story of Elex better. You also don't get to use hyper-advenced technology in Horizon (besides a set of advanced armor and a few occasiional heavy weapons that you can't keep after their ammo is depleted).
Horizon doesn't make you join any of the in-game factions (well, strictly speaking, you begin as a member of one of the factions). A welcome change: finally a Gothic-like game that doesn't try to increase its replayability with a mandatory choice of factions (which, apart from giving you different armor and weapons, have little influence on the gameplay).
The setting is what ultimately keeps you playing, the story is mediocre at best.
You may also miss the ability to choose between character builds: you're stuck with a stealth archer (well, at least it worked in Skyrim), but there's no choice between fighter/(techno)mage/generalist builds. Yes, there is a skill tree with different paths, but you'll end up needing to develop almost all of them.
I'm tired of game companies selling incomplete games, so when they're finally completed and at a good price I'll buy them.
Achievements don't work, though, so maybe skip it.
The game itself is great, but this port is nonsense.
The saves in this are so broken is basically a chore to play it and makes the game borderline unplayable. I can't go two play sessions without having to fiddle around in the menus for half an hour trying to load into the game. What's worse is 1 out of every 5 or 6 attempts it causes my entire pc to crash. Complete garbage and I can't believe gog/cdproject find this acceptable to sell on their platform. It's shameful.
I've tried lots of different fixes but none last, it always returns. Setting the exe as admin, ensuring my account had the proper security settings in the game folder, getting the game running and then deleting the entire save folder then making a fresh save. I also tried turning off cloud saves.
It's a game I waited a long time to have, I don't have a PS4 and I was very happy to see it going to the PC.
However, the price of this game INCREASED A LOT of value, due to the misconduct of players from other countries buying it in my country's currency, seeing that the dollar here is much more valued than the REAL currency than the currency in question.
The price went up from R $ 70.00 to, R $ 200.00, clearly more than double the value for an old game (I am not underestimating the game, it is excellent), but it is not worth the price of an unprecedented release.
My hope was to come to GOG, and this amount would return to normal of R $ 70.00, but unfortunately it was not the case.
I know that it is not GOG's fault to place this value, it is more of an outburst, I hope to buy at some point at the right price, not an improperly adjusted price that hurts consumers that have nothing to do with it.
