A Hollow Shell

Sadly Silksong does not respect your time and on the path to completion rather than difficulty testing you, your patience will be tested in gameplay that spends far too much time running back and forth to difficulty checkpoints that can only be overcome or you will be slowly whittled down in pointless travel times and unfun mechanics. To be clear, my problems with the game are the unnecessary resource requirements for tools that punishes you for over reliance by taking them away making you leave to farm more currencies (imagine Dark Souls making you mindlessly farm healing items). For certain encounters you are made to go through several loading screens and unskippable scenes that if you don't beat, then soon enough you will be spending far more time running back to them than actually playing the game (Dark Souls, again, avoids this for the most part letting you summon help or level up to reduce the strain of needing to be perfect). For me the final straw was being made to face a boss critical for Act 3 and losing again and again. But rather than the boss, it was the constant boring need to go through loading screens, then running, then jumping, running, entering and triggering the boss, being made to fight 3 waves of adds, THEN getting a chance to face the boss who has a very difficult and punishing series of attacks that ALL do enough damage to kill you quickly. Every failed attempt made me realize I no longer was having fun, so I quit. The act of playing the game just to get to the fun part was so annoying and frustrating to me I quit an otherwise excellent game, that cares more for meaningless setting than it does for not wasting my time. If you want a better game that doesn't waste your time with punishing maps, time wasting gameplay and frankly better mechanics that prioritize letting you enjoy yourself then I urge you to try Ender Magnolioa instead. It may be easier but it is far more rewarding.

Beautiful & Frustrating

Word of advice: Don't buy this until AFTER you play and finish Hollow Knight. My initial review of the game (made shortly after I got to play it) went on about how similar it was to Hollow Knight, and how this might ultimately end up dissappointing some people. I was very wrong. I'm in act 3 at the time of writing, and had some time to get used to the way Hornet plays. She's nothing like the little guy of the 1st game, and I think a big source of frustration - initially - was in the expectation that she would more or less be similar. Silksong is intentionally more difficult than the previous game. Many enemies have more quirks, or move more erratically, and you must learn to user Hornet's mobility and tools to overcome them. Hollow Knight, by comparison, was much simpler. As for the bosses: if the enemies try to ease you into playing Hornet, the Bosses will *force* you to learn her. You will die a lot to them, but as you learn to control your character, how to use the appropriate tools, how to move and pogo and clash (much more important than in the previous game), boss fights will become much easier. There are lots of improvements in both art and music. Team Cherry had plenty of time to focus on the details, and this becomes very obvious when looking at the game. The environments are varied, they look pretty, and many of them have lots of moving parts. It's the first game I can compare to Rain World in terms of just how nice it is to look at. The music is also great. Each track has many variations that play depending on the area you're in, and like Hollow Knight, they just sounds great. Now: the "Frustrating" part. This game doesn't wait for you. You'll often reach areas that absolutely kick your ass, and it will often feel unfair or just unfun. Many people have already made fun of the vile Hunter's March area, or the evil Savage Beastfly. These things are filters, put in place to force you to learn how to handle Hornet. You'll bang your head against this wall a lot throughout the game, but every time you overcome one of these obstacles, you'll have a much better grasp on how to play the game and you'll be happier for it down the line... or you'll ragequit and swear you'll never play again. Either way, temper your expectations, and always assume you're a worse player than you actually are.

Tons of potential ruined by poor choices

(This review was written after finishing Act 3, and was playing without mods.) I really wanted to enjoy the game, believe me. The game has a lot of great things to offer - Story, Animation, Music, Fun world to explore. But every time I start enjoy it I bump up at some of worst game design decision that could be that just ruined it. And no, i don't mean "I encounter a hard boss = bad game". Not at all. I actually enjoy learning a tough boss as long as they fair. Which in this game a lot of things aren't fair at all. Let me give you some examples Did you know the game lock the third act from the player and doesn't tell them what they need to do to proceed? The entire third act of the game is lock behind doing all the mini-quest first, and not giving any clue it is necessary. If all of the mini-quest are completely necessary to finish in order to unlock the next 40% rest of the game, then you might want to put some hint for that. The game literally has an ending credits scene in the end of act 2. Only thanks to spoilers on the internet I know that something is wrong. And don't get me started on the fact that one of those mini quest is to find all the fleas, whos hide in the most unclear and hidden places in the game. Seems like someone took the wrong lessons from playing "Rayman 1". The bosses are a mix of good and bad. Some are really enjoyable to learn, while the other are completely broken to the point it's not fun anymore. Having a super tough boss how is pitch black, in an arena which is majority black, adding a black special effects and shaking the screen every attack, does not make of a fun and enjoyable fight. If I can't see what's happening on the screen then I can't understand what I did wrong, and if I don't understand what I did wrong then I can't learn from the mistake and improve. And let me tell you - "run back" isn't fun. Having to run for a whole minute, or watching the epic animation again and again just for be able to try the boss again is getting tired really fast Unfortunately the game isn't close to be as good as Hollow knight I'm very disappointed because the game has a lot of potential

A Great Sequel

I've only had about 30 hours and haven't finished Hollow Knight 1's storyline. When I knew I could play this one without any strict prior knowledge of the first game, I tried to play it, and got about 10+ hours of gameplay. It's great.
