Silksong Review
Much harder than Hollow Knight. learning curve is steepers, some enemies are unforgiving. Music is also more ambient than before.

Very fun so far.
For all new comers, you'll get the map in < 1h of gameplay. Avoid red spikes as these are optionals and harder content. Follow the flow of the game and every bosses you'll encounter will be easy for the first 10 hours. If you have a boss fight with a long run back, you missed a bench, or attempting optional hard gauntlets. Linux support is perfect. Playing on ubuntu 24.04 with xbox 360 controller, it runs perfectly on ryzen 4700u iGPU. No controller issues that other mentioned. if you fear for your red bells currency, head back to the village and transform them into items so you always have some for a new bench :)

INCREDIBLE... however
I love Team Cherry, I hope they retire as the single most lauded indie game devs of all time. Silksong is a work of art with it's design, movement, combat, map design, enemy design, etc etc. It's all amazing. EXCEPT FOR EVERY BOSS DEALING TWO MASKS ON BASIC ATTACKS AND ON SIMPLE COLLISION. It's unbelievably aggravating for every single boss, with virtually every single attack AND every simple bump into the enemy hitbox - something I detest in any game - deals two masks of damage. Yes, every boss is possible under these circumstances, they have learnable patterns and such. But demanding near perfection to finish not just a final boss, or mainline boss but also a **SIDE** boss sucks the pace and fun out of the game. Literally 10's/20's of tries on simple bosses, and I'm really not a terrible player by any stretch. The best designed boss I've encoutered so far is the Widow; difficult, fast pace, punishing... BUT! She has clear windows of opportunity. Every death felt like it was my fault. She took me a couple dozen tries, and then once I learned her patterns, I was able to overcome the challenge. She also had attacks that hit for two masks AND for one mask. Every death gave me the sense that at least I could learn from the loss. The Chapel of the Beast boss is just awful. Nothing is predictable, the boss hits for two masks with absolutely every tackle AND collision, it spams a bunch of random enemies in that are never predictable, and very rarely do any deaths feel fair. I'm hopeful that these kinds of bosses are few and far between. I love a good challenge, but this feels like I'm fighting against the "game" and not against a character in the game. And it's awful to feel this way about a game that has had so much time and care put into it by the devs. TL:DR Double mask damage on every single boss on every single attack and collision are bad enough to ruin what might have been a flawless experience.

Loved Hollow Knight but this game is a f
Terrible economy balance. Game design that's oriented around making the player as frustrated as possible. Just all around an awful experience

It's not as hard if you explore
EDIT: After finishing 86% of the game and 3 of the 4 endings: It is extremely difficult in some places. But it still is a great game. For one boss I needed 60ish tries, roughly 4 hours just for that boss. I never do stuff like that in games, really never. I gave up Dark Souls after I think 4 bosses, I gave up on Sekiro after getting pretty far. But this game is so good that I really wanted to finish the "true" ending! Original: It's clearly not an easy game. But I'm not a Dark Souls player. I've tried several times to get into those games, but never managed and got super annoyed by them. I've finished Hollow Knight though. And I intend to finish Silksong. Maybe not 100% of it, but the story. I'm at the end of Act 2 now, so I'm close to at least one ending. During my game I always used the way of least resistance: If there was something I couldn't do, I started exploring the areas that I could and usually found skills or tools that made the other challenges easier. Or I just got better by doing the exploration, I'm not sure. There's some things that where annoying. By far the worst one: The trapped bench! Unnecessary, unfair and not fun. Some runs to bosses could have been shorter. Overall still amazing how much game is in this game. So much to explore and find. Not a perfect game, but a great experience and worth the wait.
