Great game, and runs under WINE in Linux
This is a great classic game, one of my all-time favorites. I have Linux, and hesitated to buy it because there was a warning message saying it wasn't compatible with my system. The GOG installer did not work but I was able to run the manual one under WINE and play the game with no problem. Ten bucks well spent.

Astrologers proclaim week of ...
I don't think this classic needs to be particularly recommended to anyone - the game is a legend on its own. On the plus side, in the case of the version for purchase on GOG, there is a complete version with all the extras that have come out. The downside is the lack of an HD version, which is available on Steam. Very useful with modern monitors and their resolutions. The game itself has a few bugs. For example, the random map generator can build a land where there is no passage to further parts of the map or where there is no appropriate shipyard to purchase a ship. This causes players (usually computer players) to be locked in the area around their castle for the entire game and have no opportunity to develop. To summarise. A title definitely worth its current price. The game today as well as over 25 years ago still manages to draw you in for hours. It is an ideal position for single player but also for hot seat gameplay with a group of friends. Don't hesitate any longer - add Heroes III to your collection and build a memory of this great title!

Shows its age a little, but still great.
Be warned: If you have a widescreen display, you will almost certainly want to run in windowed mode -- which requires a 16-bit desktop rather than a 32-bit desktop. HOMM3 runs in 800x600, period. Something that may not be obvious from the description: This includes the map editor and campaign editor, which were one of the best parts of HOMM3. You can make your own custom maps, and the system is extremely flexible and adaptible. The provided maps and scenarios are pretty fun to begin with, too. While HOMM4 had some lovely upgrades (better flexibility about screen sizes, for instance), HOMM3 always felt like it had the best balance, to me. Good balance, every turn is interesting, always something to do...
