Her Story is the new video game from Sam Barlow, creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. A crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, Her Story revolves around a police database full of live action video footage. It stars Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark.
How does it work?
Her Story sits you in front of a mothballed desktop computer that’s logged into a police database of video footage. The footage covers seven interviews from 1994 in which a British woman is interviewed about her missing husband. Explore the database by typing search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.
Unlike anything you've played before, Her Story is an involving and moving experience. A game that asks you to listen.

I wasn't expecting this kind of story, it was a plot twist for me, at least the way I discover the truth. I've never played an FMV game but I really like this one.
the game is a grounded mystery regarding a murder that happened, and when you get to a big twist the screen suddenly darkens, the a face appears in it and the florecent lighting sound grows much louder, its like this for about 4-7 seconds then returns to normal.
i was not expecting this and it startled me greatly. i dont like horror and this game is not marketed as horror, why does it have a jumpscare? the revelation was great enough that it wouldve been more profound if it was simply the player working things out in their head while the game goes on as normal.
I first played and reviewed ‘Her Story’ back in 2015 on Steam. I loved the game so much, and found it so refreshingly innovative that I just bought it again so I’d have a DRM-free copy. Below is my Steam review:
‘Her Story' may not seem like much aesthetically (and intentionally so), but it is one of the most well-designed, well-written, entertaining games I played this year. It has a simple premise of having the player searching through police interrogation videos using keywords to unravel a mystery. It is full of surprises, and I dare not to write more so you can discover them yourself. For the most rewarding way to enjoy 'Her Story', I suggest that you don't read any reviews or wiki entries (no more than you need to to convince yourself to play this game), and don't check out other players' achievement statistics. Just dive right in and play detective.
Her Story is a great game. The game play involves looking through a database of videos. The catch is that only 5 videos are displayed at a time. As you watch videos you have to make notes of keywords. By using keywords in the search engine, you are able to watch more and more videos. The videos are done well, with an amazing actor.
I won't say anything about the story to avoid spoilers.
Her Story is a unique experience that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the story in games.
Speculating, jumping to conclusions and pulling apart a story are all major strategies in this game. It's your job to find the truth or the closest you can come to it. This game rewards careful listening and observation. If you enjoyed the ending of the Usual Suspects, then you will enjoy the way this game flips the narrative.
