[Only Part 1] But very good so far!

If you're new to the series, please note, The game orginally released in 2008 on the PS2, This remake Took the single game, and split it in two parts, and orgnally released on the Vita, "Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds" is only part 1, and part 2 "Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms" is just the rest, (not really a sequal" I have not yet finished the full game yet, so I won't be giving story notes yet, (I'll update this review when I fnish part1+2) But it should be noted that while this game has extra content, the translation seems a bit diffrent than the eairler release, (on ps3/psp/3ds) The wording has changed quite a bit, if it's for the better or worse will depend on your own peronsal prefrence. I've not finished either, but I kinda prefer the orignal text, The orginal had a slightly diffrent feel to the presentation of the text (not the tone of the story, but how it's presented.) The new text also seems to have quite a few more errors, like weird wording, or repeating lines, But this new translation, is still fine overall, and the extra content may more than make up for it, for many people.

Chastest Romance Game Ever

This game came off feeling like a complete tease. The images of the main characters are good but re-used often. There's very few meaningful art cutscenes between events and I saw absolutely no romance whatsoever in my first playthrough. I got Yamazaki's path...not by choice. The guy I was aiming for was nowhere to be found. I have a hard time thinking anyone is going to be able to play this and get the ending they want without a walkthrough. I wouldn't recommend it.

The Achievement Titles are Killing Me!

NOTE: Part one doesn't have a ton of romance. That really starts in part two which is a separate game; Hakuoki - Edo Blossoms. --- I really like the characters and the story. It has been a lot of fun so far! I'm a big fan of Shinsengumi stories, and this has hit a lot of the character beats I am used to seeing with the most well-known members. I was surprised to finish this first part without much romance happening at all. A few heart palpatations, that's about it. The language about "choosing" a love interest is a bit of a stretch. You get to hang out with the dudes that are in each scene, there is hardly ever a choice to pick who you are with. With some of the events that happened in my first run (and what I assume is the historical accuracy of these events), I'm not sure how romancing some of these guys is even *possible*. Also, a guide on how the romance stuff works would be nice. I figure the little animation that pops up with a moon and butterfly means I am progressing, but it seems like two of those have to happen before the "Warrior Record" or whatever shows progress. Even after completing the game I still have a menu option greyed out (something like "Record of Service"). No idea what it is or how to unlock it :p I did go in blind, so maybe my choices just weren't consistent enough? In any case, hopefully the romance I was waiting for in this part will make itself known in the next! --- ***FOR ANYONE WHO CAN'T GET THE GAME TO RUN*** If you try to launch it from GOG Galaxy and it fails to sync then fails to run the game, you are probably missing a dll file. You can confirm by going to the installation folder and running the executable directly. If you get an error popup saying MSVCP120.dll is missing, you have the same issue I did. I can't put links in a review, but you can find the GOG Support article by googling "GOG MSVCP120.dll". The link should have the support dot gog dot com domain. Follow the instructions and try starting the game again. This fixed the issue for me.
