honstly don't listen to the negative reviews if you enjoy playing gewnt solo this is perfect for you i honstly had and am having a blast playing you get what you pay for imo.
What does Rogue Mage have going for itself? The art and general visuals are really nice and feel like a proper representation of the world of The Witcher as a card game, just like Gwent and Thronebreaker do. Also, it's pretty cheap.
That's about it.
Thronebreaker was alright in its gameplay and pretty good in the whole storytelling and worldbuilding aspect. Rogue Mage completely lacks either. Story just simply isn't there, except for some dialogue here and there.
But much more notably, the gameplay is pretty bad. The key component which made Gwent stand out from other games, namely the resource-based aspect of managing your cards and deck, is completely removed. All battles are just a single round and at the beginning of every turn, you draw a card.
That's especially sad, considering the base game of Gwent literally has a resource management mechanism built into it, which is one of the key components of every rogue-like deck building game. And for some reason, they decided to remove it entirely and replace it by a generic energy system.
If you like Gwent solely for it being based in the Witcher world and having nice card art, go for this game too, I guess. If you want something that actually matches the complexity of that game, you're looking in the wrong place.
It's interesting to play in spare time, but I do feel sometimes it lacks ways to improve the deck. It made me feel like I was wasting my time because of this. Sometimes the AI makes suboptimal plays, but the challenge is definitely there.
If you want something akin to Thronebreaker, Rogue Mage isn't it. It's a roguelike deck building game with a neglectful narrative. It's very hard to grind through to get those small chunks of narrative that barely transcend the story nodes you unlock in the Gwent Reward Book.
im writing this review because i have the hope that i can persuade or advise people who are on the fence about buying this game who are obviously aware of the glaringly negative reviews.
this game is not throne breaker 2, this is a slay the spire clone. like slay the spire you have 3 characters you choose from, in rogue mage you choose from 3 decks and as you progress you add cards to it. just like STS.
rogue mage, and this (in my carefully pondered opinion) major downfall and reason why it has been received so negatively, OFFERS NO HOOK. nothing to grab you, pull you in. etc. slay the spire has an imaginative , curious world, with bombastic music , climbing the weird and wonderful living tower to defeat the heart. rogue mage falls flat on its face and offers a measly unemotional uninspired nibble of alzurs history. honestly i wont deny, it flat out sucks.
HOWEVER. the game itself is great i have over 100 hours in it. and am up to the last challenge the game provides. it has been a ton of fun.
THE PROBLEM IS that the game does not present itself well. it looks like a bland , cheap , mobile game , with an endless grind.
it is not. it has a surprising depth, interesting mechanics (progressing through the imposed handicaps), planning and strategy (knowing what your opponent will play), longevity, gwent stuff that we all love.
as it stands, i dont expect the vast majority of people to play this game. only the patient gamer who will come to a decision after a long time or diehard fans. i know this because i too hated this game at first, it was only because im a naturally curious person that i wanted to know why this game caused such negativity within me and others.
my conclusion: this is a 7-8/10 . if Slay the spire is 10/10, Monster train 9/10.
ive played worse. this is good solid fun!
As a Gwent fan, this was a no brainer and mixes the mechanics up pretty well.
Price point is not bad, deluxe is for Gwent unlockable items for the most part.
The solo aspect is also nice, being able to chill or walk away mid turn is a bonus.
