Description
Enter an apocalyptic fantasy world where humanity is on the brink of extinction, iron is valued above gold and trust is hard earned. This ARPG features complex character development, hundreds of unique items, crafting and quests with choice & consequence.
  • Dual Class - Combine any of six distinct classes with over 25 skills and modifiers per class. Base classes include Soldier, Demolitionist, Occultist, Nightblade, Arcanist and Shaman.
  • Hundreds of Item Skills - Augment your class build with a diverse array of over 250 unique skills granted by items and equipment add-ons.
  • Collect hundreds of Items - Common, magical, rare, epic and legendary classes of loot. Plus over 20,000 possible magical affix combinations and over 200 rare affixes.
  • Quests with Choice and Consequence - You will face tough decisions that leave significant impacts upon the world. Strangers on the road, desperate families and even entire villages may live or perish based on your actions. Currently over 35 quests with 75+ lore notes to be collected.
  • Friendly and Enemy Factions - Earn favor with human factions to unlock additional quest lines, vendor discounts and special faction-based items and augments. Some neutral factions can be turned into allies but aiding one will make the enemy of another. Hostile factions will remember your deeds and deepen their hatred of you, sending out large packs and elite heroes to hunt you down.
  • Devotion, an additional layer of skill customization allows you to acquire bonuses and powerful secondary effects for your class skills. These are unlocked from a giant constellation map with points acquired by finding and restoring destroyed or corrupted shrines hidden throughout the world.
  • Rebuild the World - Help human enclaves survive and flourish by securing vital necessities, rebuilding structures and rescuing survivors who can then lend their services to your cause.
  • 4 Person Multiplayer - Connect with Friends or make new allies in glorious multiplayer. Multiplayer encounters will put your teamwork to the ultimate challenge.
  • Fast-paced Visceral Combat - Enemy blood spatters, ragdoll physics and satisfying enemy death effects. Smash in doors and fight house to house, leaving a path of demolished furniture in your wake.
  • Rotatable Camera - If you choose to survey the full beauty of the world and always fight from the most optimal angle. Levels are still designed so that players are not forced to rotate the camera; it is purely optional.
  • Secrets and Perils Abound - 200+ Enemy heroes and bosses, hand-configured with their own unique arrays of deadly skills. 20+ secret areas hidden behind crumbling walls, hidden gaps and mysterious locked doors. Explode obstacles or repair structures to open new paths.
  • Rogue-Like Dungeons - Descend into special locked challenge dungeons that require a rare crafted key, where enemy levels increase as you progress and player teleport is disabled. There is no way out except to complete the dungeon or die trying.
  • Dynamic Weather - The world is brought to life with region-specific climates and a variety of weather effects. A sunny day can cloud over with mild rain showers that builds into a booming thunderstorm. Variable wind gusts blow grass and affect objects like windmills.
  • Recipe Based Crafting - Collect over 250 crafting recipes that allow you to combine salvaged components into unique crafted items and then, later, use those basic crafted items with higher-tiered recipes to complete items of amazing power.
  • Reclaim Skill Points - The ability to pay to reclaim points alleviates the fear and frustration of having to make early, uninformed skill choices that could permanently gimp a character.

The best DIABLO-like game

Here's a DIABLO-clone that beats them all, DIABLO II & III, PATH OF EXILE, TITAN QUEST, TORCHLIGHT, made by people who clearly love those games. This game gets everything right that DIABLO 2 & 3 messed up: atmosphere, a great skill system, interesting enemies and an engaging story. The atmosphere is unique and grim - not cartoonish like D3 or TORCHLIGHT, there's a sense of dread, monsters are truly terrifying, not little cuddle-buddies like the baddies in D3. The dark fantasy theme is mixed with 19th century firearms, magic and post-apocalyptic destruction and it works. Character classes are not your run-of-the-mill stereotypes like "barbarian" or "mage", you pick from "soldier", "occultist", and such classes. You can even multi-class with a second class. There are two huge DLCs available which add two new locations that are almost as big as the base game each and are definitely worth their $20 and $15.

Its great but...

The intro, story and so far game play really captured me, it seems more guided and linear than other games, but those are usually less interesting, so its quite still good. Graphics do look dated, for 2016, but once you play a bit longer, its hard to notice it and it somehow starts getting pretty, not to forget the fun it also brings to the Table. But when i wanted to play with others online, it forces me to use GOG Galaxy, there is DRM in this and i cannot be bothered or want to use GOG Galaxy, and requiring something like that for online play is DRM, so i bought in the end, half of the game i could have gotten.

Awesome. 100% Worth it

Awesome game by an awesome developer. This is my favorite ARPG by far. I knew about it a long time ago and I regret not getting it when it was new. This game is gorgeous to look at and very satisfying to play. So many ways to play, so many things to try, and an impressive amount of diverse loot/gear. Like Diablo I & II? Like Lovecraftian Horror? Like ARPGs made by developers that actually know what they're doing? If you said yes to one or two of these, I recommend this game. You can expect awesome things when the all the people involved with making the games also play them. Grim Dawn has had massive and awesome updates. Differed Rendering, visuals, balancing (Veteran is now properly difficult), and a ton of other things. Many issues in other reviews have likely been patched. The Devs are great. The game is great. -- (Above review is also my Steam review)

I am not a traditional ARPG player

As the title says I have an odd relationship with ARPGs. This can be summarised as, I enjoy them but I don't really care about loot. You're probably thinking that is stupid. ARPGs are all about the loot. Sorry but I just think grinding loot for the sake of a pointless stat in a game is a lesson in futility. No one gives a crap what your DPS is. You can play this game for 1000 hours if you want to but you won't have anything to show for it except your age. Your stats and that fancy armour your character is wearing is a collection of binary data and nothing more. Loot for me, is the thing you collect on your way to a boss, or the end of a story. That is where this game falls down for me. There is no story. Unless you count fetch quests and your character getting possessed without a single attempt at explanation. One dimensional characters you find at random in the world who will throw their overbaring burdons on you depsite not knowing anything about you. There is no presence here to keep me going. Nothing keeping me coming back. Sure, if you are the sort of person who's character stats and ability builds are the number one priority you might get some enjoyment but for me that stuff is secondary and that stuff is very boring. I'll give you an example. Diablo III might have a lot of things wrong with it but going on an epic adventure to destroy a massive Demon is interesting. As are the characters. As are the minor bosses. Yet even in Diablo 3, when the story was done I was done. The combat was satisfying but there wasn't enough to keep me there. Grim Dawn is Diablo 3, with a better skill system and none of the story/character and that is a deal breaker for me.

Grim Dawn takes the ARPG throne

This is currently the best ARPG that I know. Well paced, good atmosphere and most importantly: it gives you full control how to develop your character. Interesting classes and well balanced skill trees that allow for different development paths within one class. The constellation devotion bonuses add another layer of complexity. In comparison games where you have no control over the character progression and everything is only decided by your equipment are boring. (Diablo 3, Victor Vran, ...) Does that mean that one can take 'wrong' decisions and get a sub-optimal character? Yes, but skill-points and devotion points can be re-skilled if you notice it doesn't work. For a price of course, but money is easy to come by in this game. Summary: Grim Dawn takes the RPG part of ARPG serious. It takes some learning, but is very rewarding. I liked Titan Quest and the Torchlights, but Grim Dawn is more fun than both!
