Bethesda beatdown
I never played the original Gothic, but I HAVE played Gothic II extensively. For those new to the game that are struggling with the combat - that's the entire point of the RPG mechanics! You start off pretty damn rubbish at fighting, but you pay for training, you buy better weapons, and you get better. The mechanics, if you're more familiar with more recent games by Piranha Bytes such as Risen, will be familiar to you in this game. The immersion factor is very high - this is because unlike the rival RPG of the time that was Morrowind, there are NO load points in Gothic II. This means that you can run from one side of the island to the other in one go - which is something the developer gets far too little credit for achieving. In addition, you can swim around it and to another island. Also the AI is great. Unlike Morrowind, whereby you walk into a stranger's house and they just stand there dumbly looking at you, in Gothic II, they will wake up and ask what you're doing there if they're asleep, or come back in from outside and threaten you into leaving. There is a VERY nice graphics mod for this game too - which I strongly recommend looking for - as it also makes the game run smoother as well as the graphics upgrade. I can't claim to have completed Gothic II, but I certainly have ploughed hours, and hours, and hours into it, and urge you to try it out especially at just £1.99. Whilst Morrowind is of course a wonderful game, Gothic II totally stands on its own merits and does a few very key things better than Morrowind does.
