Bethesda beatdown

I never played the original Gothic, but I HAVE played Gothic II extensively. For those new to the game that are struggling with the combat - that's the entire point of the RPG mechanics! You start off pretty damn rubbish at fighting, but you pay for training, you buy better weapons, and you get better. The mechanics, if you're more familiar with more recent games by Piranha Bytes such as Risen, will be familiar to you in this game. The immersion factor is very high - this is because unlike the rival RPG of the time that was Morrowind, there are NO load points in Gothic II. This means that you can run from one side of the island to the other in one go - which is something the developer gets far too little credit for achieving. In addition, you can swim around it and to another island. Also the AI is great. Unlike Morrowind, whereby you walk into a stranger's house and they just stand there dumbly looking at you, in Gothic II, they will wake up and ask what you're doing there if they're asleep, or come back in from outside and threaten you into leaving. There is a VERY nice graphics mod for this game too - which I strongly recommend looking for - as it also makes the game run smoother as well as the graphics upgrade. I can't claim to have completed Gothic II, but I certainly have ploughed hours, and hours, and hours into it, and urge you to try it out especially at just £1.99. Whilst Morrowind is of course a wonderful game, Gothic II totally stands on its own merits and does a few very key things better than Morrowind does.

Great Game with a lot of game time

This is a pretty long game, which I really like. I will say with the Night of the Raven add-on, it is sometimes overly tough and when you first start playing even a bit frustrating, but any hardcore RPG gamer can always find a way to get the job done. I'd strongly suggest setting up the quick save/load options as you're going to get your ass handed to you a lot when you first start playing. The story and adventure are top-notch. I found myself wanting to play this game all the time. There are some bugs, but you'll learn quickly not to hit them. But when the game does get locked up the only option is to pull up the task manager and kill it -- which is difficult because it will often keep trying to go back to the game in full-screen mode, but with some gamer skills and timing, you can do it. Really a great game overall -- well worth it. I'd rank it close to Wizardry and Arcanum.

Rough Masterpiece

Gothic 2 has mediocre graphics (even for its time), a clunky interface, and a control system that takes getting used to. It's also very difficult at the beginning, and you will likely die before you even get to the first tower. It is also one of the greatest RPGs ever made. The world-building, the sense of true progression (none of this "scales to your level" business), the replayability, and the true sense of exploration have rarely been equalled by any game before or since. If you truly love RPGs, you will love this game.

Endless possibilities

Love this game, after all those years admire it even more. Gothic 2 itself was amazing, Gothic 2 Gold (with notr) is extraordinary, and thinking about all those mods available it`s impossible ^ I completed this game so many times in so many ways, preferable playing as Mage with Bow, Master Sword and acrobatics. Since it gets to easy for me starting from Khorinis surroundings (after ~20th time of playing) I simply climb a mountains and jump to Valley of Mines or jump over a door to Valley standing on handle youtu.be/SjKoIyI1xoU?t=313 . So if you ever get bored of chapter 1 try to take essentials only and go straight to Valley, there are many scrolls letting you turn into powerful animals, you can be neutral to most creatures that way, or make vast amount of exp, and even rob dragons :o Have fun! :D Pozdro

Top Ten RPG in everyone's lists

If you call yourself an RPG gamer, you would have played this game. It is one of the most likely RPG to pop up in anyone's top ten RPG games of all time. Not many RP games released since this game are better. A challenging and rewarding experience with one of the better storylines to boot. If you're yet to experience this game, or are missing your old discs, then buy this game now!
