An acquired taste

First off this includes Night of the Raven, which shifts the leveling system and in some cases makes things a lot more tedious, second off played with OpenGothic, a source port of the game which allows it to run natively on newer hardware without compatibility patches. To Gothic 2 itself, it falls in "eurojank" since it's both well polished and buggy, the game takes a while to get used to playing as combat is directional (as in you have different types of strikes dictated by how you move) for melee and magic is, for the most part, unviable for your first play through (aside from the scrolls you pick up) but that's compensated by a tightly designed world space without level-scaling, never is there an area that feels like it needs more to do nor is there a bunch of empty space, Gothic 2 places either a mini-counter or a quest everywhere and your build dictates your best course of action. Aside from the world space, Gothic 2 does a great job of making the world feel dynamic due to its small size and npc interactions, you'll find if you are too generous you won't get a return on your generosity, a few faces from Gothic might recognize you but you are a stranger to most, often times the best decision isn't clear cut, etc... and the major factions play nicely together too, you'll find that, unlike Gothic 3, if you side with a faction you will get unique reactions from other factions. Overall the game is a little janky at first but underneath that jank (and min-maxing thanks to NotR) is a tight-knit, well-designed, world space with engaging quests.

This is one of a kind

After playing Morrowind hours and hours I think I'll never see a rpg that could surprise me. I was wrong. Gothic 2 is an excellent game with a great history. Every single detail in the game makes you play and you wish why there isn't more games like this. I play Gothic 2 when it was released, played again again many times. I still had the original but also I like the no-drm policy of GOG so I buy this game again and can had Gothic in my PC and neetbook without cd.

This Game RIPS

I've been an avid Gothic fan since Middle School, having played through the vanilla versions of Gothic 1 and 2 several times each. I've never found another game series that is as atmospherically immersive. A few months ago I decided to dive back into the series and slew through Gothic 1 in about a week, after which I decided to try G2 NOTR for the first time. Initially I was extremely annoyed at the MASSIVE criticals that every enemy delivers while my sword had the effectiveness of a twig.. but with time it became extremely rewarding. The expanded world of Jarkendar is a great addition to the story and offers a compelling continuation of a variety character arcs from Gothic 1 that brought me a wonderfully new yet nostalgic experience. The Bandit's camp is like an inbredation of the Old and New Camp's from Gothic 1, but located in a swamp as if paying a little homage to the Brotherhood as well. I only wish Gothic 3 had carried on in a similar fashion.

More for the nostalgic and determined

This release as some issues with resolution adjustment, you'll have to install mods (e.g. DX11) to fix this, visit the forum here or go to worldofgothic. There are also texture, shader adjustments mods available to give it a better look, however I'm unsure of repercussions, I got a outofmemory volilation error which killed my save and well I discontinued playing it. About 10 hours in review The game for its time is pretty neat, theres no hand holding, fend for yourself, which i can appericate, but thats also a double edge sword. Progressing in this game seems abscured at times. Its probably best to review a walkthrough to get a better sense of what the game is implying. I think there are some "pitfalls" in games progress. So an example, I was applying for apprentice of hunter. He requires 6 wolf pelts. However I've ventured out and already killed most wolves in that region. The bodies fade and the enemies dont spawn (until the next chapter on higher level. I think). Furthermore you can only have one proffesion out of the hunter, lockpick?,smith, and alchemy as far as I can tell the masters will not train you there on out. This is why I think it would be best to review a walkthrough at least to get you started. There is otherwise a good "harshness" and critical thinking to it though, You can be confronted by a thug that'll beat the crap out of you for your gold, should you venture in a shady area or trespass. You can venture out the wildreness and the animials will beat the crap out of you. You can talk to somebody wrong and they will beat the crap out of you. And yes the combat is wonky, but it has it intituitve design based on the time of open world game pioneering (my opinion its better than Morrowind's sodding combat). It offers a mouse free control experience, this is somthing a laptop gamers can benifit.

Gothic 2 vanilla

Is it possible to play fully patched Gothic 2 vanilla without DLC Night of the Raven as well as with DLC? Or you can play only Night of the Raven version?
