Fun! Sort of...

I guess I will be the only voice of dissent about this game. I remember playing these games quite a few days before the internet. Back then, those hint books were a downright NECESSITY if you ever wanted any hope of completing these games. In the "What's cool about it" section of the game, it lists Mind-boggling puzzles but the reality is that the so-called puzzles can only be solved by randomly clicking on the screen with no rhyme or reason for it. Cute? Yes. Funny? Absolutely. Logical or coherent puzzles? Nope. Before the internet, I had to shell out for the hint books... All three games are included, at a great price AND they include the hint books! That's nice. Be aware: You'll be printing those out and following the instructions in order to finish these games. Have fun with that. As for me, I'll play something a little less random and a lot more fun.

One of the true classics

I've always loved Gobliiins. I loved the artstyle, I loved the humor, I loved the sense of discovery as I figured out the nonsensical and illogical puzzles. Without a guide as a teen I would be lost. But it still is a gorgeous game and it's still fun to play. You can now choose between the CD and the floppy version, so don't listen to the abysmal reviews criticising those issues. Also the audio works great.

This game is HARD.

One of the hardest games I've ever played. Unless your patience is limitless, I urge you to use the Hint Books included for all three games when you feel stuck -- sometimes it is difficult to know where to even start on the screen, or what is your objective. Sometimes this will be the only hint you'll need, other times things will get more complex; certain sequences require you to travel back and forth between screens, and so on. On the bright side, you can't 'break' your game because it won't let you proceed until you have done everything you were supposed to in every scene. The first game is the most difficult because you have a life bar which drains as your goblins get hurt or scared by various things. While there is a point in the game where you can refill it, I found that once it got drained too much before you passed a certain point, it became impossible to finish the game. That's because at that certain point you inevitably suffer some damage and just keep dying if the life bar is too low, forcing you to replay from the beginning, or from some earlier screen. This is why it's useful to jot down the passwords for every level. Luckily the latter two games did away with this 'life' system so the gameplay was a lot less frustrating. You can keep trying as many times as you wish and there is a normal save game system, too, so you don't need to finish a screen to save your progress. There are also more in-game hints. Still, referring to the Hint Book is useful because even if you have the right idea, sometimes there is a catch to the solution, such as getting the timing right (sometimes you have a split second to react for the solution to work), so it can save you a LOT of time pondering what you did wrong. Did I mention beautiful artwork, adorable character animations and witty humour? Recommended for adventure/puzzle game enthusiasts.

Amazing Games but, why the voice over??

As soon as I saw that GOG has all three Gobliiins games available for download, I did not hesitate in purchasing these games and adding them to my collection of must have classics. I am somewhat disappointed that Gob 1&2 has had a voice over done. I remember the good old Goblin games having a unique language of its own and every level with specific music, thankfully still provided in the soundtrack option, but playing the games with a voice over does however change my experience with it. Gobliiins 3 however is exactly as I remember it and I'm glad nothing has been done to it, however if 1&2 if at least had the option of playing with or without the new sound effects, I would give this game a full five stars, other than that, GOG, keep up the good work!! I love this website!!

Difficult and fun, but has problems

This review is only for the first two games, as I have yet to play the 3rd. Maybe things improved... Most of this review centers around the 2nd game. First, the games are very random and illogical. That might be kid of fun, except these are not very intuitive. And worse, in the first game you are penalized for guessing what you can't know. That is not difficulty; that is simply unfair. Fortunately, the dying element was removed in the second game. Leaving the player to focus on the humor of the game (which there is from from time to time). However, only time to time. I know the game was made in the early 90's. I don't have high expectation, but this is from a successful game company. What's with the recycled music, voices, sound effects? I know games often recycle where it won't be noticed. But in a short game (an hour and a half to two hours if you know what you're doing) it is very noticeable. The same guy was used in the second game for most of the voices! And they even used a guy for female voices. Cheap much, Sierra? But that might have been forgiveable, if the game was easier to navigate. It is not. At all. A character stands in front of something or even half in front of it and there is no way to click behind it. Click to send a character somewhere and he might walk halfway across the screen. trying to take a long way that doesn't even lead there. Don't get me started on swapping items. It seems to take about 5 steps for a simple exchange! And when you pick up an item you have to right click until the character changes back to the walk mode. In short: clunky interface. And in the second the illogical puzzles don't work well since much of the puzzling rely on perfect timing and using both characters simultaneously. In first game, if they took out the energy bar, I would have enjoyed it more. It was a bit more charming in its way. But too frustrating with dying and a bit simplistic--even for the time. The second was just a disappointing sequel.
