Game with a soul, but no heart.

www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/10/15/wot-i-think-gabriel-knight-20th-anniversary/ This article here sums up the game better than I ever could; Characters appear to be floating, projected 3d models over a flat backdrop with no real sense of depth to it. Any Quality Assurer worth his salt could see that, if they continued using the same team and mechanics as used in her previous 3D Games, that GK20 was not going to live up to its hype. You know that indescribably aesthetic touch that makes certain games so great? GK 20th lacks them. It is a good game, it is solid, and it is Gabriel Knight, but this nails it. "Really, go back. Look at the original. The choice of colour palettes; cold but comfortable blues against bright and chaotic orange. The incidental animations. The rich texture of the backgrounds. " The cool, humid morning of New Orleans as Grace shows up for work? The homely feel to the bookstore, the cloudy day feel to the St Louis Cemetary, and the warm feel to Grannys House? They are gone in the new Gabriel Knight. They are no more than just paintings that you could find on DeviantART. There is no passion, there is no heart in this game. There is none of that original "Sierra" magic to it. It feels like a students first game. + Beautifully new painted backgrounds + Recomposed digital versions of songs over the dos MIDI verisons - Low resolution (made for ipads in 4:3, not for PC in widescreen) - Badly animated, with models that look as if they were made by high school 3d modeler interns - No Tim Curry or any original voice cast, new voices are not terribly brilliant either (there is no "heart" in these characters voices, they sound like random off-the-street people) - Simplification of a game that was meant to be a puzzle (The classic "dumbing down" scenario) - Clumsy ipad-designated interface - Lack of aesthetic Quality Assurance. I'm willing to bet the QA for this game never grew up playing the originals. I'm sorry Jane, I really am.

Unnecessary and disappointing remake

Sins of the Fathers has been my favourite adventure game since always, God knows how many times I've played it. I've been a GK collector all my life and I own so many different copies and editions of the games, comics and the novels that I believe that it's without any doubt, the game I've played most. Even the remake has some nice things, I have to admit that I'm disappointed by it. GK1 has been a classic since it came out and even some people might be turned off by its pixel-ish graphics, it really didn't need a makeover. Except for the soundtrack, most of the things of this remake were unnecessary. The graphics are now less dark and (in my oppinion) less attractive, the new game system is dumbed down considerably and even it looks nice, the art in cut-scenes and dialogue screens look worse. The original GK1 could be played with SVGA graphics, showing nice portraits with lip-synch. The remake ones are disappointing, specially in Gabriel who looks like he did in GK2 and 3, but not like he did in 1. Another thing that feels like a downgrade are the new voices, Tim Curry was a great Gabriel and the new one is just not the same. As much as I understand people wanted a better quality audio, I don't know why they didn't give the option to put back the old voices like other games that suffered a remake had. For example, Silent Hill 2 got an HD version with new voices but there was an option to bring back the old ones in case people preferred the old actors. Maybe they could offer the old voices as a DLC? I'd definitely get it. As a whole and as a fan, I'm very disappointed with the remake since it was not necessary. I'm not regretting the purchase since I love the soundtrack and I really wanted to own this new version of it, but I don't think I'll be able to even finish this game. It's painful seeing all the downgrades it suffered compared to the original one. However, if you're new into the game or you don't like old Sierra Games, I'd definitily give it a chance.

Worst. Remake. Ever.

It might actually be considered a major accomplishment to release a remake that's actually inferior in every way to the 20 years older game that it's supposed to replace. Well, they managed to do it. Gabriel Knight now is a no-charisma 3D piece of nothingness, and without the excellent voice acting of Tim Curry anymore, god does he feel wrong. 3D models are poorly animated shames. Everything looks like the kind of work a group of fans with no actual knowledge in programming would have done, without the passion. Seriously, buy the original, wich is better in EVERY way.
