A classic with improvement.

They kept the original script. Gabrille hasnt been turned into a diverse female and new voice actors almost sound the same.

Excellent remake!

This is flawless a remake! Combines being true to the original while making improvements and modernizing. And its visually stunning! Being a hardcore fan of the original, I'm surprised to say that the new voice-over cast is a success. Especially happy to see the essence of Gabriel's cocky New Orleans character being intact. I would also mention Grace, Dr John, Mosely and Frick as outstanding performances. Love the remastered music. Couldn't be more happy with this 20th anniversary edition! Visually its a balanced mix of photo and painted textures, blended with pre-rendered backgrounds and real-time props & characters. A nice touch is the ambient atmospheric particles & lighting effects. The bonus option to view old concept art from the different locations, combined with info and audio interviews with the original developers is a nice addition for fans of the old game. I would highly recommend this game for adventure fans, looking for a story driven game. If you are already a fan of Gabriel Knight, what are you waiting for?

Very good remake but not the original...

The Gabriel Knight series is one of my favourites in the gaming world, so when I heard about this remake I pre-ordered. It's been very well done, but as a fan of the original I have to say it's lost some of its charm. Going from a 2D layout to a 3D one means some things had to be cut. For example, Gabriel can no longer climb the ladder in the book store, but Grace still tells him to "get down". Another one is that Gabriel no longer hugs his Gran when he goes to see her. These are small things but I feel it was a shame to omit them. The story is the same, with a few minor changes in puzzle item locations, and the inclusion of a few new puzzles and screens to keep it fresh for returning players like myself. The screens have been faithfully recreated and updated for our modern platforms with HD and the music has been amazingly remastered. The voice actors do an awesome job, although a part of me misses Tim Curry as Gabriel. Overall, I really enjoyed re-playing the original story in its updated form, although I can't help but feel the time put into making this would have been better spent on giving us a Gabriel Knight 4...

Good back then, but no better now

I was introduced to Gabriel Knight through "The Beast Within", and I absolutely loved it. (I even fell in love with a Japanese-descendent girl a few years later, just because she looked like Grace! What a time that was! But I digress.) So to me, GK1 became like a prequel. The pixel art felt like a step back from the (fairly successful) Full Motion Video of GK2, but once I got into the story I found that I didn't really care about how it looked. The pixels made the clock puzzle difficult, since it was hard to see what the symbols were, but otherwise this might as well have been text-based. The remake feels less genuine, in a way. Not as soulful. Gabriel doesn't hug grandma anymore. The scene with Wolfgang does not nearly raise as much emotions as the original. And the voice acting is not as good. Many of the actors try to emulate or copy from the original, rather than doing it in their own style. Only Tim Curry can say "I really don't wanna die. Can we try that again?" with the same, slightly sarcastic, southern drawl. The changes that are there are mostly for the worse: silly puzzles added here and there. (But I do like the new Schloss Ritter scenes!) One should never go back to streets where one has lived, or revisit old love interests, and perhaps the same is true for computer games. If you are the kind of person who re-reads old books, why not give it a try. It's like a new edition with new shiny pictures, and it brings a bit of difference. Have you never played GK1? Do it, but you might as well play the original.
