Description
The Beast Within is the second installment of the trilogy presenting the dark adventures of Gabriel “Schattenjäger” Knight. This time the protagonist is on the trail of a strange wolf, murderer of a little girl. Gabriel was asked to take care of this evil and suspects that this case is paranormal in nature. Together with his assistant, Grace Nakimura, he discovers the dark truth behind the history of Bavaria.

The game employs full motion video technology to its fullest. The actors move through photo-realistic sceneries and every action leads to an FMV sequence. The game is a classic point-and-click adventure where you lead two characters through masterfully designed riddles, tons of life-like detective work and perfectly scripted dialogue. The friendly user interface is a finishing touch making this title a masterpiece you don't want to miss.
  • A fully cinematic adventure game that lets you play both Gabriel Knight and Grace Nakimura
  • Discover the truth about the death of King Ludwig II and uncover the mystery of Wagner’s lost opera
  • Explore actual locations in Germany captured in 1000 beautiful, high-res images

Very entertaining and well made

There are only a few games that used FMV well, and this game certainly qualifies as one of them. The actors are pretty decent in their roles - some of them are great - and the story is an intriguing one which kept me coming back to find out more. Unfortunately, the game is not able to keep the momentum going all the way though. Up until chapter 4 I was loving it, but suddenly you find yourself literally walking around a bunch of museums. It brings the whole game to a screeching halt and I found my interest waning considerably. I'm not interested in a museum simulator! Fortunately, the next chapter was right back on track, but the very end of the game is really no fun and not the best design. Some puzzles here are just daft and it left me just wanting to get the game over and done with. As an FMV adventure game, the interface is great and the execution of the whole thing very well done. It's very immersive and if you enjoyed the first Gabriel Knight game (I did) you'll certainly want to continue with this, probably better, game. One thing I did like was the language barriers. A large number of characters speak German and it's not often translated for you. It requires you to concentrate and listen, and I thought it was a really nice, daring touch which I doubt many other games have even attempted.

Best adventure game ever!

Recently played this version of the game on my Asus Transformer pad, ran fine by installing in windows, dumping the installed files on the tab and running sierra.exe through dosbox turbo! If you like mystery horror stories, you will probably find this the best story ever written in a video game, the way it blends fact and fiction to a point where its hard to tell where the fact ends and the fiction begins is genius. The story is fairly slow paced but extremely suspensful, helped a lot by the excellent acting by pretty much every cast member, which is a rarity for fmv games. The fmv itself is only in 256 colours but still looks decent most of the time! The interface is simple and the puzzles are mostly logical, but you may get stuck a few times. The puzzles are all object manipulation based so if you aren't a fan of slidey tile 7th guest/myst type puzzles this is the game for you! The length is good, even if you know what you are doing, or don't get stuck it can take a good 8 hours+ So if you played an fmv game once and it put you off them for life, throw all that out the window and buy this game! as long as you like mystery/horror storys and graphic adventures you can't go wrong!

Good story but very aged FMV

I was eager to play the second game in the series. I knew that it was very different from the first one. I am not into FMV games but gave this one a try. Pros -Very good acting (the best I have seen in games) -Excellent story (that is also a little bit educational) -Keeps you engaged for a long time Cons -FMV in this game is obviously very aged. Sometimes it´s tough to endure the bad quality -Easy to miss explorable things on screen. Ends up with clicking everywhere -Some puzzles can be quite difficult to solve, especially if you don´t do things in order (for example: Can I get into this store? Nope. But later I can). I usually don´t use walkthrus but in this game I really had to. Cut scenes and long walks worsened this issue. -Dialogue sometimes gets too loud that it generates noise (bad recording maybe)

The best FMV in town

This game surprised me so much. I was not a particularly big fan of the first GK, and the third was a chore to play (I felt), but there is something about GK2's naturalistic approach to both appearance and subject matter that made me thoroughly engrossed. Good enough acting, but with a great script (Have you ever heard of the language of death?), and puzzles that never annoyed me but kept the story going. I would recommend GK2 to anyone who likes a good supernaturally themed adventure.
