Released by LucasArts in 1995, Full Throttle is a classic graphic adventure game from industry legend Tim Schafer, telling the story of Ben Throttle; butt-kicking leader of biker gang the Polecats, who gets caught up in a tale of Motorcycles, Mayhem and Murder.
Now over 20 years later, Full Throttle is back in a remastered edition featuring all new hand-drawn and 3D high-resolution artwork, with remastered audio and music.
I played this back in 1995 on my PC, one of the most memorable games that I played back in the day and one of the best games (in my opinion) aside form The Dig and the Indiana Jones series that Lucas Arts produced, thank's G.O.G.
I will start off by saying that I still own my physical copy from back in the day that plays very well inside of DOSBox. I bought this remaster for it's improved sound quality, graphics, and commentary by developers. Well I'm a bit disappointed.
To start I noticed that there are some sound glitches in some scene transitions where the sound should bleed over into the next scene but instead is chopped off. It's nothing major, but it makes the game feel unpolished especially when DOSBox can do the job right. Second there is the remastered graphics. They just don't belong. The characters look incredibly refined while everything else just gets a resolution boost and looks really drab. Also any scene that had any animation to it like rolling clouds is now gone. Everything is lifeless and static. The road scenes and levels run at about 15 frames per second like the old video footage in the original used to and the landscape which is now fully rendered looks terrible. The remastered music and sounds are nowhere near as good as the original. The remastered voices are excellent as they are nice and clean. The commentary by the developer is very low quality in both sound and content.
The good news is that you can pick and chose which features of the remaster you want on. I chose the original graphics, music and sounds, and remastered voices. The bad is if you already own the game like I do, there really isn't anything here for you. The other bad thing is that you don't get the original CD version of the game so you can play it in either DOSBox or SCUMMVM if you want to. This should have been included especially since DOSBox and SCUMMVM do a much better job at running the original which didn't even need remastering in the first place.
The bottom line is if you own this game already, don't buy it. If you've never played this game before, definitely buy it.
Same game, HD graphics. I haven't played this in 10-15 years and I am so glad that this remastered brought me back to one of the best adventure games of all time. For 3 hours last night I felt like I was 10 years old again. Please keep it going and remaster all LucasArts games!!! If you have never played Full Throttle then this is a must buy.
I've played this game about once a year every year since it came out. Still holds up incredibly well, and it's possible the simplicity is a big part of that. It's also probably just the best thing Tim Schafer has ever written.
If you haven't played this by now you are missing one of the greatest adventure games ever made.
The problem with a lot of Adventure games (even more so now than ever) is they try to do too much. This game understands how important a good story is, how important the puzzles need to be logical (even if silly) but still simple enough.
The main problems have always been the same. The combat is bad. The thing is (and they've not removed it from this version) you can skip all of it (on the part when you have to run mine road, whenever the fight starts just hit shift+v- your welcome kids) if you want to so in my opinion that argument is invalid. I always liked that part, but in part this is due to (at the time) my misunderstanding that this wasn't actually an action game (like I thought it was- I was a kid then haha.)
Another down side (always has been) is the frustrating demolition derby scene. It's tedious, but when you know the actual answer to that puzzle it's fine- you can finish it in 30 seconds. You just gotta get through it.
All in all I love this game. This isn't my favorite game of all time overall, but it is my favorite Adventure game of all time. It is the best, and no Adventure game is better. Period.
All love and remembrance to Roy Conrad.
