Released by LucasArts in 1995, Full Throttle is a classic graphic adventure game from industry legend Tim Schafer, telling the story of Ben Throttle; butt-kicking leader of biker gang the Polecats, who gets caught up in a tale of Motorcycles, Mayhem and Murder.
Now over 20 years later, Full Throttle is back in a remastered edition featuring all new hand-drawn and 3D high-resolution artwork, with remastered audio and music.
I'm a huge fan of the overlooked original and especially when it comes to dramatics and real cinematography, I even think it's LucasArts best adventure. The original game would receive 5 stars from me.
But to call this a Remaster is just bold! They simply used lots of softeners on the graphics. But we still get the exact same colorless sprites and low framerate.
They had the chance to actually update the graphics to something better, use actual 3D models for all vehicles, but all they did was paint over the old graphics and hope noone will notice that it doesn't look any different at all...
On top of that - no update to the sound. Exact same mediocre quality for dialogue and music. I could accept that for a game which came out in 1994, but not for a Remaster from 2018.
If you'd like to play the game, get the original plus ScummVM and enjoy. But this lazy Remake is not worth its money.
[I got this through a humble bundle, with others, for $1]
Granted, I'm not much of a point-and-click adventure guy, primarily for the same reasons I wasn't horribly impressed with this one. The graphics update is great, it looks good (I switched to the original graphics many times to compare. Yes, that's an on-the-fly option, and a big thumbs up there).
I honestly did have fun for the first hour.
But then it started slogging down, pretty hard. I'm a 40 year old engineer, pretty bright, and I've been gaming since c64 days so there's not many games I have problems with. As I said, I don't play a lot of these types of games, mostly because of the same problem this one had. After a mere hour of playing, I ended up spending 2 more hours trying to figure out a single puzzle on my own. I ended up looking it up because it was too frustrating and it was down to "look it up, or quit." Anyway, I found the solution to be incredibly non-intuitive, and something I would have never honestly guessed at doing. The next 3 "puzzles," which occurred instantly thereafter, were just as maddening and non-intuitive. I also experienced multiple crashes (perhaps the GOG version avoids this problem? I doubt it, but that's no fault of anyone but the makers).
I can see where old-school fans who played the game 30 years ago find it fun, it really does seem like a good title, and if it worked. . . and had puzzle solutions that made sense, I'd like to love it too. As a newcomer to this one (and again, not a big point-and-click adventure guy), I'm kind of sad this wasn't what I'd hoped for.
There are multiple "hidden areas" (you have to click random locations, where there's no indication, or reason, that it's a valid place to click), the puzzles (at least at times) are completely non-intuitive, sometimes also hard to see, and I've had multiple crashes.
I can't give this 4 or 5 stars, and I suspect those who did played it long ago or relied on walkthroughs the whole way through.
Years after playing it, I ended up buying an actual chopper motorcycle to go burn some asphalt myself, in great part because of this very game.
What else can I say?
Only reason this doesn't deserve 5 stars is the length of the game. The very first play-through will take you only something between 3-4 hours, which is far too short for me. I ended up wanting more... :(
The remaster is a great update to the graphics, but it feels rushed in a lot of areas to me. Overall, the game still feels great, has a good story and awesome audio.
The cost of this remaster is worth it for the audio commentary and the ease of being able to play Full Throttle on a modern machine.
