On The Edge is the third and final expansion for Frostpunk. All expansions are available in Frostpunk: Season Pass which can be found HERE.

"They say the snow is dead. But we've learnt to the contrary."
- Samuel Robinson, Frostland Scout (1887, New London).

About On The Edge expansion:

Assigned as the leader of a newly formed Outpost — settled near the Army Warehouse — you are kept on New London's leash and bound to transfer all your precious findings to the headquarters. At the same time, you have to rely on scarce food deliveries and laws enforced by your supervisor. It's a delicate balance to navigate — each decision introduces new risks and hardships. But as soon the alternate food source is discovered by your scouts, you can start to think about surviving on your own…

Snowy tides turn quickly on the Frostland. There are other Settlements out there willing to cooperate with you. Once you manage to gain their loyalty, designate trade routes between new allies, and regain control over your Book of Laws, then you can form a strong, independent union - and shake off New London's yoke.

On the Edge - features:

  • New Frostland mechanics: Settlements and Safe Routes
  • New Relations mechanics: Favours, Improvements, Trading, Diplomacy
  • New Unit: Construction Team - used to build Trading Depots and Safe Routes
  • 16 brand new areas on Frostland and new lore added to some of the old sites
  • 3 new city structures and 7 new technologies
  • A brand-new Setting in all Endless Mode variants: Settlements
  • 25 minutes of new music (6 tracks) composed by Piotr Musiał
  • Many smaller additions, improvements and fixes

On The Edge gives you the opportunity to break free of the shackles New London has inflicted upon you and turn your ice-cold will back onto your masters.

For a final DLC it felt... underwhelming

So, after playing through all the dlcs for Frostpunk (except for Rifts), I have to admit, I expected something... different. The idea was nice, what happens after the storm? However, what I got instead was the last autumn but in reverse. It also made my scratch my head, as it's possible to get New London fully automated and save everyone. Hardest difficulty may be a bit too much, but still, it's doable. So, what I got was searching for supplies and the whole favor system. It was way to abussable. Favour is average? Ask for supplies. I haven't even bothered with the child's mine on the first playthrough. And then, there was the warehouse. I mean... it was basically a glorified steel mine combined with tesla city or something. The fact that I could only send 20 people inside, not 50 like last autumn could combined with lack of any decision making in the warehouse made it more annoying than anything else. TLDR: I expected vehicles, threats, some more exploration. What I got was 'last autumn 2.0'.

Too random.

Without too many spoilers - the success in the scenario depends in a good part on where you send your scouts - and since (when playing first time) you can't know where to look and for what, it effectively depends on if you are lucky when picking the direction. Other than that? Fairly fun, but the criitique in the other reviews feels quite accurate for me as well, so I won't just repeat that.

Another Frostpunk Senario

The best thing about Frostpunk: trying a new senario and puzzling through how to solve it. It's different enough, you might have to give it a couple of tries before figuring it out. The main mechanic this dlc adds is the "Settlements". I thought it was a great new concept, that at times fell short on the execution. The trading is simple. You send them things you have, they'll send you things you need. You can send special shipments to increase production. If you do things they like, they'll owe you favors, that you can exchange for resources. This is great in the senario, where for the most part you can only produce steel, steam cores, and a limited amount of wood. One of the settlements produces food, which is essential. One produced wood, which you need later on. The last produces coal. which you won't need at all. They have children, so you'll want to help them out. But coal is literally something you'll never need, especially since in the senario you'll have way too many people, and nothing to do with them but put them on coal thumpers. In endless mode, you can enable settlements with the disasters... but they're pretty much useless. If a bad event hits, you need a strong stockpile to weather it. Small shipments from settlements won't make a difference. They're more "something else to do". One last thing: The 7 techs this dlc mentions... it all has to do with the senario, and how fast you can pull out steel and cores from the army warehouse. Also, I think they're calling the "Army Warehouse" a new building. It felt like they were fluffing up some pretty basic stuff.

The most innovative of the three DLCs

From the three DLCs available on the season pass this is my favorite. It feels as a continuation of the main game. Yet, with a disturbing turn of events. The new concepts, such as the trade routes and diplomacy bring a lot of new juice and challenges. However, they could have benefited of more polishing. For the trade, you cannot have food and eventually the wood will be depleted. Therefore, discovering the new settlements will become paramount. Which, on a first game may be hard.

Unpleasant ...

.. nagging, annoying, everything is whining at you. If you like frustration and anxiety this game is for you. Too bad as the graphics, the music, the atmosphere and even the gameplay is enjoyable. But I feel like the balance is off, it feels as though the devs really want you to feel the dread and non stop someone is complaining, some bad thing is happening.
