"(...) this is a game about finding reasons to survive rather than just the means to go on living."

- Adam Smith, Rock, Paper, Shotgun

"In a steampunk ice age, the only thing that can be crueler than the bitter cold are the decisions you have to make to keep your people alive."

- Stephanie Chan, VentureBeat

"(...) decisions push your morality to its limits for the sake of productivity, which could make for an captivating, draining adventure when the game releases later this year."

- Suriel Vazquez, Game Informer

In an ultimately frozen world, people develop steam-powered technology to oppose the overwhelming cold. The city ruler has to manage both the inhabitants and the infrastracture the citizens live in. Leader’s tactical skills face challenges, frequently questioning morality and the basic foundation of what we consider an organized society. Here optimization and resource management often clash with empathy and thoughtful decision-making. While city and society management consume most of the ruler’s time, at some point exploration of outside world is necessary to understand its history and present state.

What decisions will you make so the society can survive? What will you do when pushed to the limits? And...

...who will you become in the process?

THE CITY MUST SURVIVE

Frostpunk is a city-survival game where heat means life and every decision comes with a cost.

MAINTAIN THE HOPE

Survival is about hope and will to live. Your ability to spark and maintain these two in your people will be a determinant factor for success.

MAKE THE LAW

Society is a group of people abiding the same rules and sharing similar beliefs. Establishing laws and customs will be a crucial factor shaping your society.

WEIGHT YOUR CHOICES

Will you allow child-labour? How will you treat the sick and wounded? Frostpunk challenges a player’s tactical skills, while questioning one’s morality.

EXPLORE

The world covers not only bits of the past but also the potential means to secure the future of your people.

Victorian Gentlemen Freeze Best.

318 survivors. Out of how many? I don't know. I do know I killed 40 by hitting the Triage button at one point. Somewhat a spoiler but; at 0*c water freezes. At -40*c, you can do the trick where you throw water out the door and it freezes before hitting the ground. ...At -150*c? You're probably a popsicle. I do wish that heat generator zones overlapping provided increased warmth. It would provide more reason to turn on the +range buttons, especially since the range increases come later than building the generators, and thusly I'd already provided coverage by building the things. /le shrug

Phenomenal twist on a classic genre.

Choices matter and the better games on the market take this into account for a more rewarding player experience. Frostpunk is certainly one of those games. Every choice you make impacts the future survival of your struggling colony. However, what at first was a small annoyance turned into a pretty remarkable experience. Namely, we don't know in advance a significant portion of the game dynamics. In most building and managment games (Civ, for example), we are given very clear metrics. We know exactly what needs to be accomplished in order to win, we can explore the different paths available, and develop a strategy from the onset in order to complete our objectives. Frostpunk throws all of this out the window. Unless you read some spoilers, when you are tossed into the frosty wilderness with your struggling band of followers, you really have no idea what needs to be accomplished. It is as true to life as can be accomplished in some aspects. Sure, gather up some resources because you'll need it to expand, but expansion itself turns out not to be the goal. Place some houses and industrial businesses, perhaps a heater here and there, send out some explorers. Can't be that difficult, right? One of the things I liked the most about this game was that my experiences forced me to change my strategy and regret some of my previous choices. Not unlike real life. We are not given a clear view into the future which adds a certain level of excitement and mystery. Any subsequent play-throughs will be conducted with a significantly different strategy because I now have prior knowledge. While there will certainly be enjoyment with repeat play, it is the initial session which shines for me. Wonderful game and well worth the price.

A hard surface with no depth

I've completed all three game modes. It took me 2 games to get my head around pacing and the learning curb and after that it was fun. I played through the three modes and now there is nothing else to do, except play the same modes again on higher difficulty. I wish they took the same approach as Pharaoh & Cleopatra and allowed you to continue playing once the “objective” is complete. The game was fun but I got 10 hours out of it and there really isn’t much more to get me to go back, so I’ve uninstalled.
