As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat just changed.
This is the beginning of The Great War.
Includes the original Freespace and the Silent Threat mission pack
Multiple beautiful space fighters and bombers with customizable loadouts
A gripping story full of epic space battles and plot twists
This came out about the same time as WC5. I remember going to newsgroups and telling people this was much better... I was then told to STFU. Looks like this game held up better over the years, and is still an epic game with a great story. Totally worth a play.
I have a lot of memories from this game. Boot good and less good.
But overall the feeling from Freespace 1 is one glowing thing of beauty.
I've not given the highest rating due to the somewhat aged graphics,
by today's standard at least. Also the high number of keyboard combinations
to remember is cumbersome.
But all in all this is one mother of a game. Only superceeded by Freespace2.
A story to die for, and told with power. Mmmmmm :)
Undoubtably the best sci-fi game of it's time, a lot of memories and epic battles were fought in this amazing game. ...There's more battles yet to be fought and memories to play. ;D
As a child I loved the game Colony Wars, and I spent years looking for another space sim that could match those memories. The Freespace series has certainly proven to be one of the best experiences I could ask for in this genre, and is indeed a Good Old Game.
But even a top notch game like this has flaws, and the most glaring one is in its controls. The game is playable with a keyboard and mouse, but there are times when one needs to dogfight hordes of enemy fighters and a mouse just can't cut it. The game recommends a joystick and that should be taken as a warning. If you don't have a joystick, then be warned. The game will still be immersive, it will still be one of the best games ever, but you will die painfully in certain heartless missions.
Admittedly the second game had less problems with plot, for at times I felt that this game would just arbitrarily throw more and more powerful enemies at you just for kicks, but even with its cliches the game managed to seize you with its immersive storyline and setting. You are a cog in a great machine, and even if you die it's likely that some other great GTA pilot will save the day.
If you do have a joystick, then it is criminal for you not to buy this game! If you don't have a joystick, you should still get this game. This is one of the brightest gems of GOG's catalogue by far! The only game that tops this one is its sequel, hands down, but playing this one will certainly help you in the long run for the sequel.
