great game
Pretty good game, from easy to very challenging, different options between diplomacy and fighting, differenr races, the need to manage different colonies, trading, spies, it really has it all. Especially good considering how old this game is. Graphics aren't great, but the game itself is

Classic 4x with unique mechanics
It's all about the economics. Everything hinges on money, including research. I like to capture astroids, use engines to park them in a corner, and build up till I can have a few attack asteroids with nothing but missle and ship facilities. Then I break out and wreak aliens days. Simple gameplay loop but very satisfying.

Not my kind of game....
I really wanted to get something out of it and invested about 60hours into it. And it is very repetitive. You try to find asteroids. Colonize them. Expand your radius find more asteroid colonize them. Colonizing is boring. You build exactly the same 30 buildings and maybe 2 or 4 different mines. Colonizing is tedious. It takes a lot of effort to click and click all those buildings. You sell minerals and buy tech, finance colonization and ship or missile production. At some point you meet one or two alien races and make a peace treaty. Later on you gain technology to build machines to move your asteroid. Now you can get further away, find asteroid build the same building and colonize. You get a lot of messages, but they repeat over and over again... At some point you are rich and have all the tech and start producing large space ships and maybe missiles. Now you could wait for a peace treaty to end and got to war. I really think that this game is boring...

Great old throwback
This game, while not being too sophisticated by modern standards, was a great fun and advanced 4x title for its time. Diplomacy is all well and good while you're building up your empire, but the game really shines when you start slugging it out for supremacy. There's a good variety of ships and missiles you can research and build to dominate the enemy, but for extra fun buy black market purchases to give you some new tools and hard to find resources to throw those asteroid annihilators or species killing viral infections at an unsuspecting world.
