Description
FoxTail is a classic point-and-click quest. Drawing inspiration from the old pixel adventure games of the middle 90's, we create an atmospheric and spectacular world without using sophisticated modern technologies.

Complex and variable tasks: the world of FoxTail triggers player’s imagination and gives an opportunity to solve problems in different, but equal in complexity ways.
A charming story: echoing the leisurely rhythm of the old school adventures, the story is still colorful and impressive, but never boring.

Characters and their stories: every character in the game has his own life, in which the player will have to take part, one way or another.

The main heroine, Leah the fox, is charismatic, funny and cunning, as any fox is supposed to be. She will have a long and difficult journey: through the labyrinths of mines, mountains, swamps and dangerous forest at night, defeating her own fears and helping those who meet her on the way.

All this is for the great positive goal that doesn’t allow her to retreat or surrender.

Nice, cute and bland

I can tell that creators' hearts were in the right place when making this game. It mimics the style of point'n'click adventure games of the 90s, and does it quite well. Graphics and music are spot on. However, this title has several problems. The biggest one is lack of humor. They put everything on a one furry, cuddly, fuzzy card, with no spunk whatsoever. Characters and the story are bland and uninteresting, forget Guybrush Threepwood or three wacky goblins. You will be nice to your grandma and collect herbs. You will walk miles and miles (or shall I say screens?) in a nice looking, but monotonous forest. It feels like a game for children, but I think even they would get bored very quickly. After a couple of hours of playing, I am completely not interested in what happens next in the game. I am sure this type of clean, cozy experience will find its fans, but if you are looking for a good story and some laughs then it's probably not for you.

If you like classic adventures best...

It's no secret that "FoxTail" is inspired by classic adventure games from the early 90s. If you too regret that retro games are a relatively small segment of the market nowadays, check out this game. It is one of the most faithful to the classic "quest" genre and classic style of pixel art among retro games created in the last few years. Graphics are absolutely amazing and, on average, even better than in those classics. As I'm writing the review, three chapters out of planned eight have been released. In each one the approach is slightly different. In the first one Leah doesn't yet expect that she will have to go on a quest, she's just starting a summer holiday with her granny - and so it's comprised of a series of small task. In chapter 2 all puzzles are done to achieve one goal. In chapter 3 it's similar, and on top of that, all puzzles culminate in getting a single item which is needed to move on to chapter 4. The game is mostly rather simple. However, what keeps it much more captivating and prolongs gameplay is the backstory. Leah will find her grandfather's diary and keep discovering more about his past. She will also make her own notes, so the diary should be checked regularly (particularly in chapter 3, when Leah writes down clues in the diary). This aspect adds a lot of mystery to the plot, and at this point the secrets are still far from being solved. So far we can assume that chapters will be markedly different. The type of sceneries is different in each chapter and, interestingly, each one seems to have an overarching theme - herbalism in chapter 1, sailing in chapter 2, music in chapter 3... It also gives the game characteristics of a "Bildungsroman": Leah continues learning new things and will come back from her quest as a different fox. Remember that what is available now is not even the half of the final game. Each chapter may not be very long, but together they will probably form an epic game.

Very charming, cute Adventure

The puzzles are fair, the characters are interesting. I really enjoy the optics. They do a fantastic job to remind you of the old Adventure era in the 90's. My only complaint is that the click to move to the next area led a few times to the characters just going to the edge of the screen even though I clicked on the arrow. But other than that I really enjoyed the game and can't wait for the next chapters

Lots of potential

I absolutely loved the art style and music of FoxTail. The characters are beautifully illustrated and the scenes are incredibly immersive and detailed. The story is charming, but some of the dialog feels stale and forced. Some of the puzzles are just way too difficult. Even on "easy" mode, I often found myself saying "OK, what the heck do I do now?" after trying what seemed like literally every option. Example: the smoke stack. Totally understood the object of the puzzle. In my possession, i have about 4 items that could've "worked" to accomplish this. Ball? Newspaper? Tin can? Rag? C'mon. As a fan of the 90s LucasArts games that inspired this one, sure, these types of games shouldn't be completely intuitive and easy, but there's a certain (subtle) communication that happens between the game designer and player through hints and storytelling. At times this communication felt broken in FoxTail, which can be super frustrating. On the bright side, the beautiful game art DID make exploring fun even if I was out of ideas of what to do next. Looking forward to more updates, keep up the great work.

Cute game that misses a auto-save.

Why an auto-save feature in a simple point and click adventure game? Because I just lost over an hour of gameplay due to the game crashing on me (it's still in early access). If the game auto-saved I wouldn't have to do all that all over again. Apart from that its a very cute and pleasant game to play, and that's coming from a guy who can't stand playing point and click adventures. The game even comes with some interesting difficulty settings, good to see a developer who finally does some inventive with those. Like being able to set if you want to see all interactive elements in the game, or if you want to see a colored ring around your items if you are able to use them or not.
