Its a little rough around the edges, but I have had a ton of fun with Foundations. It is more in the Cities Skylines camp of Zen Builders, and the great feature of this one is its organic pathing and such! The ability to build large works like churches and castles is really appreciated too. Good game overall, excited to see where it goes.
finding the game fun, engaging, i llike the seamlessness of the building, the graphics are great, i just have a few problems..i think the starting area is way to small, i am told there is not enough housing but i do not have room to build more housing, i find that frustrating.
When i get my second plot of land i build a fishery and am told there are no resources close enough, seriously.. that is just wrong, get in a lil row boat and go get the fish anywhere on the lake sheesh.
I have lenses in my eyes, and have cataracts and issues with reading text, i see the scaling and have it at 150 but it is still hard for me to read the text in the game on some menus especially, maybe make a bolder font available to help please.
When beginning the game it would be nice to choose a type of visual look to the buildings, also a painting wheel to give some variety to the buildings after they are built would be nice. Even being able to color the roof tiles on different buildings would make it look nicer.
I would like ability to click on a building and move it easily esp resource buildings.
Ambitious game, beautiful design, but riddled with bugs.
I'd say pathfinding is easily the worst offender, with toons walking around the map twice just to find the food stall they work at, so they can buy food, only to find out that in the meantime, all has been bought up and now they're left to starve, complain, and leave.
Then there's the building mode – ambitious and promising, but without a way to either adjust the terrain before building, or adjust the heights of the buildings in a more seamless way, anyone looking for symmetry will tear out their hair in despair.
Missing localisation strings (in English... #MANDATE_IS_IN_PROGRESS) are just some of the other minor issues; I mean, there was a big "release" out of "early access", but the game still feels like before, or even worse in places; for example, there was a fully dynamic weather system with droughts and storm seasons that has been taken out with a button to manually select the lighting mood as a "replacement". Animations that are missing and have been promised for years are still teased as "yeah, we will put that in eventually" – who is going to care if it takes yet another five years?
Just for disclosure, I do own the game and have played over 600 hours "on that other platform" because of their superior Linux integration – I just can't be bothered to manually set up Wine for the gazillionth time.
That said, it runs fine on Proton, with a couple of quirks like missing overlays; but nobody's going to notice those few more among the plentitude of other, more serious shortcomings.
I'd love to give a more positive review, but in the state it is now, I just cannot.
Super fun game to play!
Easy to start and getting progressively more complex, but in manageable way so that it does not overload a player with too much at once. Great art style and really good music make playing a very pleasant experience.
Mechanically it is great that you do not have to min-max and micro-manage everything. In fact the main point is to let the settlement develop organically. There is enough needs management to keep you busy but not too much to make it tiresome in late game.
It was in EA for 5 years and it is still actively developed, although it already is a full complete game. So my only hope is that they do not break it now by changing it too much.
Also some people claim it works poorly on their machines. Can't say the same, for me works smoothly on 5 years old PC (rtx 2070s & i5 104000f).
I recently purchased the game on sale after looking at it several times,
What pulled me over the line was the many updates/patches and versions the devs seem to release quite often, currently working on a UI overhaul even releasing a small update for christmas. (SEE "FORUM DISCUSSION")
So far (about a dozen hours in) the game does not dissapoint and reminds me of banished and the settlers and even though I experienced some small bugs nothing was gamebraking or more than a little annoying.
I hope to see the game grow in the coming months/years and look forward to what it might become.
