A decent game but not a worthy sequel

It's a farily decent game I'd say. Heck it even has some rather enjoyable moments and the campaign has a good lenght without feeling it is dragging its feet. But in general it plays like a design-by-the-numbers FPS and throughout you can't help but feel like it was developped with consoles in mind first and PC second. Just like in the original the "horror-parts" fall flat as ALMA never really poses a treath. That's a real shame because with the shooting feeling somewhat lackluster it is the one thing that could've elevated the franchise above mediocracy. But that sadly doesn't happen. There's 2 things better than in the original: graphically the game looks very nice even today and environments are far more varied. And secondly the story is stronger in this sequel. But beyond that it fails to build upon the foundation F.E.A.R. established. The GOG-version comes with the "reborn" DLC bundled in. Don't expect too much out of that though. It is only 1 or 2 hours long but it does have an intresting take on the story. Buy it in a sale if you're intrested but you're not missing much if you give this game a miss.

F.E.A.R. was a little bit better...

...and the first game was not very good either. This game had less jump scares and was approximately as scary as the first game. In other words: Not particularly scary. Doom 3, the two first Dead Space games, and even the two first Bioshock games were (much) more scary than this. This game just took me about one third of the time to complete compared to the first F.E.A.R. game including Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate! This game had much of the same graphics as the first game(s), but with some improvements, among other things, it natively supported at least up to 4k resolution (the first game(s) could be made to handle 4k with some editing). The first part was mostly too easy on the middle difficulty (Normal), and the second part was a bit unbalanced: OK for the most of the time, and then suddenly unreasonably hard with too many enemies at one time/or a collapsed building where you die if you make one wrong turn/armored enemies that suddenly pops out and so on. Everything is made worse by the inability to save when you want and/or need to save: The game is only saved at set save points! Because of the inability to save, and the lack of horror in this "horror" game, it is tempting to give this game 2/5, but it is not THAT bad, and if you get the game on offer, you at least get a OK/good bang for your bucks in the form of at least an OK FPS with some slight horror elements... I guess that if you liked the first game(s), you will like this game if you accept that it is (much) shorter. But if you did not like the first (game(s), then you might want to skip this game. At least if you do not get it for a low price.

Thoroughly Mediocre

Fear is a passable 6/10 game in isolation. It's generic and mediocre, and reminds me strongly of every FPS game from 2006-2010. There's very little unique or interesting to say about it. But it's even worse in the context of FEAR 1. I'm not going to harp on the AI, because I think people overinflated the AI from F1 and F2's felt very similar most of the time. But, there are many other things that are annoying: * Visuals have not aged as well. Lots of mid-2000's bloom going on. Looks extremely generic visually. * The music feels very generic, and frequently doesn't fit the tone of the scene * Shaky-cam and flinch is way overused * Way too easy on normal. Health, ammo and armor are absurdly plentiful. Hard doesn't make enemies smarter, just makes them 1-shot you which isn't a challenge * Sprint is pathetic. Why is it even here? * Too much text to read, and most isn't interesting. I stopped bothering quickly, reminds me of Rise of the Tomb Raider's issues. * Weird obsession with gore. I don't mind gore, it's just odd. I guess gore = scary? It doesn't add anything and doesn't work with the visuals in the way it did in F1. * Writing is standard for an FPS of the time, which is to say it's pretty bad. Not as bad as I heard though. * Weird zoom-in on cinematics, very jarring * Water slows WAY more than it's supposed to. Some kind of high-FPS bug? * Very short - I beat it in 6 hours * Unlike Fear 1, replikas and the other enemies aren't visually distinct. Hard to tell who I was fighting. * Too much tutorialization. I think after picking up ammo once or twice you'd get how it works. On the plus side, it has some cool set-pieces and cinematic moments. But it's not enough to dig it out of this hole.

Overrated

This game isn't as great as the first one. The story isn't that interesting. The gameplay is linear and repetative, making it tedious. Most of horrors are jump scares. Buy it on sale.
