Did you ever want to reroute power to the shields, set phasers to stun,
or even eject the warp core? Well, now you can! In FTL, you experience the
atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a
dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with
multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down
your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape,
power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the
fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation
roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure
through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.
FTL's complex strategic gameplay allows you to give orders to your crew,
manage ship power distribution, and choose weapon targets in the heat of
battle. You will encounter unique alien lifeforms and technology. You can
upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien
races. Be the Captain you want: hundreds of text based encounters will
force you to make tough decisions. In the randomized galaxy each
play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your
decisions. Each time you play another challenging session of FTL: Faster Than Light, it won't be quite the same.
Unlimited adventures in the vast depths of unpredictable space.
A new randomized galaxy to explore each time you start a new game.
Quick play sessions (from 5 to about 90 minutes) will allow you to add that spaceship commander feeling to any of your days.
I'd been watching out for this as it had been hyped in PC Gamer quite regularly and it sounded right up my street.
It is indeed brilliant, a fantastic little game that deserves to do well. Also one of those "why has no one done this before!?!?!" type of games-it just works really really well.
My one and only regret was that I got it on Steam before noticing it was on here as DRM free easy installing across multiple machines would have made this a perfect fit for the gaming laptop my family use for journeys in the car!
It is a fun game, but very hard (to me at least) esp. since there is no easy save and load functionality. I play an average of 6 games in one hour and never get beyond the third sector. I wish there was a super-easy setting!
Simple, easy to use interface
Great concept
amazing replay factor
I've had it for a little over a day, and spent most of 10 hours on it already.
The price was great, and the game is awesome.
I expected a horribly dull game by the look.
I expected to put this game down after a single try to go back to playing my minecraft addiction or sims3' or even 1 of over 200 games on my system.
I expected countless deaths at least to get tedious.
In fact theres little not to love about the game.
It will suck you in with a just one more try attitude as you aim for the next ship onlock to 'work that weasel... and knock it up a notch'.
My best thoughts on why it's so good is that it is almost as if it was one of the best co-op space survival sim boardgame, except unlike most things has not been ruined in it's transition from turnbased to realtime.
Put simply the game is a time sink and though it may not enrapture an audience the only negative i could find is the difficulty trolling through shop after shop for a specific weapon to complete an achievement.
Lets face it that's my own 'completionist' fault not actually a tarnish of the games brilliance.
I sat down for a quick session with my new game just to try it out and see if I hadn't just wasted my money. Two hours and 100 encounters later, I knew I found a new, great game. I'll be playing this for a while. While seemingly simple, there are limitless possibilities in your escape from the Rebels. Fly through dangerous nebula to put some serious distance between you and your pursuers, fly through friendly sectors to restock on supplies, or take on Rebel systems to put a hurtin' on your enemies; it's all up to you. This may be on the higher end of the prices on GOG.com, but it has been well worth it so far and I can't wait to put some more time in.
