Did you ever want to reroute power to the shields, set phasers to stun,
or even eject the warp core? Well, now you can! In FTL, you experience the
atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a
dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with
multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down
your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape,
power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the
fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation
roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure
through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.
FTL's complex strategic gameplay allows you to give orders to your crew,
manage ship power distribution, and choose weapon targets in the heat of
battle. You will encounter unique alien lifeforms and technology. You can
upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien
races. Be the Captain you want: hundreds of text based encounters will
force you to make tough decisions. In the randomized galaxy each
play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your
decisions. Each time you play another challenging session of FTL: Faster Than Light, it won't be quite the same.
Unlimited adventures in the vast depths of unpredictable space.
A new randomized galaxy to explore each time you start a new game.
Quick play sessions (from 5 to about 90 minutes) will allow you to add that spaceship commander feeling to any of your days.
One of the best rouglikes, and I enjoy playing it very much. Also, the multiverse mod greatly expands the base game so I recommend it to anyone who wants new content and strategies. Basically, you will feel like playing FTL 2.0
It's a very promising game with some really great ideas, but the randomness is obnoxious. Making a jump into an area with an impossibly powerful enemy with no warning is ok, sometimes. When it happens every game, a dozen games in a row, at random spots with no possibility to prepare, it's dump.
Really promising other than that.
I’ve had the game for about 2 weeks now and played it many times. I’ve won many times, and unlocked 7 of the 8 unlockable ships and most of the B variants. I’d say luck plays maybe 25% in determining if you win or lose. Most of the times I died, I know what my mistakes were and what I should have done instead. Most of those involved getting greedy and taking risks I shouldn’t have.
The forum here has a lot of good advice for beginners—like not risking crew members unless there’s a blue option (giant spiders, oh noes!). The game will teach you by killing you—if you’re willing to learn and don’t give up easily
Faster Than Light is a leaf on the wind. Watch how it soars... and then buy it.
Here's the gist: you're a captain for the nebulous "Federation," teetering the verge of being overthrown by an equally-nebulous "Rebellion." Your ship serves the role of Leia's Corellian Corvette in Star Wars, with information regarding the enemy that would cripple its fleet and win the war. You and your crew move from point to point across the galaxy - racing against the rebels to reach the Federation fleet on the tail-end of the galaxy and face the rebels in a big final showdown.
You get little customization of your crew to start, but you can add other characters of various races as you go, all of which have unique abilities - Rocks are immune to fire, Zoltan provide extra power to systems, etc. Crewmen gain skills over time, so leaving them in one place leads to specialization and a form of characterization - you get attached to your helmsman, for instance, and feel the impact if he dies.
Like any good roguelike, players don't have the time or resources to do everything. You must choose all actions wisely. Bad decisions tend to snowball, and, as you're often flying blind, luck does play a factor. Games like that have a risk of feeling arbitrary, but FTL manages to avoid that for the most part. I will say, though, the final boss made me throw my wireless mouse more than once.
The game's pixelated aesthetic is simple but quite pleasing to the eye; however, what gives the game its atmosphere is Ben Prunty's remarkable soundtrack. It's eerie and charming all at the same time.
Play-throughs can go fast, often lasting less than three hours, and players unlock new ships as they go. Coupled with a robust modding community, the game's potential is limitless. This is a really, really good game, and if you have even a fleeting interest in it, you will be richly rewarded.
While the game is charming and might be a nice experience, there is too much luck involved. You need to be lucky to finish the game, even at the lowest difficulty.
You don't find a decent weapon in the first sistems. Game over.
You get boarded by 5 mantises and have only 3 crew members. Game over.
You get attacked by a ship that has a super powerful missile weapon and didn't find defense droid, and the game decides your dodge rate of 45% is just an opinion. Game over.
You somehow get to the last boss without getting any decent gear. Don't even try that.
Just go play slot machines at this point.
