Far Cry® 2, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, takes many of the great ideas from the previous game and improves upon them, making a pulse-pounding, high-speed shooter that roars through the beautiful, if sere, environments of Central Africa. With stunning visuals and deep gameplay, this game takes everything you liked about Far Cry® and ramps it up to 11.
You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to do what it takes to take down the Jackal, a dirty arms merchant who has made your new homeland a war-torn hell.
You must identify and exploit your enemies’ weaknesses, neutralizing their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning, and of course, brute force.
This is the Fortune's Edition of Far Cry® 2, which is patched up (like every GOG game) to the most recent version which includes the Fortunes Pack DLC that added three new weapons and two new vehicles to the game, as well as several new multiplayer maps.
One of the most interactive and destructible environments ever made for an open world game, with special attention paid to a realistic fire engine that's a pyromaniac's dream come true.
Fight for different rival factions as you confront the ugly truths about conflict in a poor, war-torn country.
Great story complemented by fantastic open world first-person gameplay!
- big and beautiful map
- not much to interact with
- respawning enemies
- repetitive tasks
(don't forget malaria)
After first FarCry this game was a beautiful step back and marked open word repetitive gameplay loop that stands in Ubi games to this day. Some people praise it looking through pink glasses, but I remember it for what it was since it got out, great looking boring simpleton that sold well making them stop with what they were good at (PoP, Beyond Good & Evil, XIII etc.).
If you MUST have it, wait for a deep sale.
Far Cry 2 does a brilliant job of immersing you in it's African landscape immediately, almost invoking a role-playing style after you select your character. Couple this with blood diamond hunting, black market weapon dealers, and warring factions and you have a game that does a lot to keep you engaged.
There's only one problem: Bandits. The game has roving bandits that are neutral and are designed to provide a challenge even if you are allied with a few factions. Yet, they pop up. ever. time. you. drive.
Drive from point A to point B and you'll be subject to bandits chasing you in a vehicle or a checkpoint where they are armed with rockets. This happens every time.
You'll be in the middle of trying to complete a mission or running side missions and be hassled constantly by these annoying enemies. Lost? Consult your map and the bandits will magically appear to disrupt your day. Low on ammo and driving to the safehouse to get more? Bandits will appear to take what bullets you have and then massacre you.
Far Cry 2 promoted critical thinking and planning ahead to ambush your enemies with numerous methods. But these bandits always reduce your tactics to run and gun. It's overly annoying and makes the game tedious and boring.
Despite so many great features, it's wasted potential and the game itself fails to deliver on some key features:
- outpost bandit regeneration
- your "friend" side quest are stupid, NPC co-characters are useless and get easily killed, every mission ends up in you trying to save them
- you spend 40 percent of the time jumping around the map, it's boring and a chore
- weapon degradation it's more frustrating rather than interesting
+ setting
+environment destruction and graphics for the time were amazing
+ weapons and combat cool once you catch up
Most of the negatives were adjusted in FC3. Cannot recommend considering there's far superior game that's still fun.
Far Cry 2 is a typical Ubisoft product of it's time. (Meaning 2007/2008/2009).
I remember the day I first saw a teaser for this game.
After that a short video with some actual gameplay was released.
It showed some of the elements this new far cry installment would contain, which all looked very promising.
Being quite impressed with the first game my expectations for this one were high as well.
Alas not all was realized end what we got was a game that has a lot of ambition, but also some very fundamental gameplay flaws.
Lets just start with saying the production values are very high.
Graphics look very good, and the power of the Dunia engine is quite impressive.
Sound design is very well done and the game truly succeeds in creating a tense atmosphere.
But its not all good.
The most important aspect of all, the gameplay, falls short on many levels and robs the game of most of the fun.
The AI is quite inconsistent, sometimes enemies spot you from miles away, shooting dead accurate, other times enemies are farting around not seeing you while you are right in front of them.
For some reason all enemies can soak an unrealistic amount of bullets, and the hitboxes in general seem a bit dodgy.
Then there is the dull mission design, which is very repetitive and uninspired as well. (Go to enemy outpost, shoot everyone, find suitcase, get out.)
In between the missions there is nothing for you to do other than traveling the world killing every single man you see, because in the world of far cry 2 everyone, YES EVERYONE is your enemy.
Far Cry 2 is very much a typical Ubisoft game of it's time.
The design flaws found in this game, are also found in other Ubisoft games released around this time, like Assassins Creed for example.
Its a shame that this game turned out the way it did, because it could have been so much more.
It does have it's moments though, and some hardcore shooterfans might want to give it a go, and might find it satisfactory to a certain degree.
But don't expect this game to keep everybody's attention span for it has lots of dull dragging moments.
I give it 3 stars, and I think I have been quite fair and forgiving even by giving it that.
It's good production values and optimized engine make it a very playable game on many a system nowadays.
And like said before, there are some nice moments in the game.
It's overall poor gameplay design though, make it a dull and unrewarding experience on the long run.
If you just search far cry 2 27% or 88% or 73% glitch. Basically a glitch that makes you unable to continue with the mission. There are a couple of fixes but so far none have worked for me so the only way right now is just restart the game.
Its been almost 12 years since the game got released and still no patch to fix this literally game breaking problem. How incompetence is Ubisoft ?
