Far Cry® 2, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, takes many of the great ideas from the previous game and improves upon them, making a pulse-pounding, high-speed shooter that roars through the beautiful, if sere, environments of Central Africa. With stunning visuals and deep gameplay, this game takes everything you liked about Far Cry® and ramps it up to 11.
You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to do what it takes to take down the Jackal, a dirty arms merchant who has made your new homeland a war-torn hell.
You must identify and exploit your enemies’ weaknesses, neutralizing their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning, and of course, brute force.
This is the Fortune's Edition of Far Cry® 2, which is patched up (like every GOG game) to the most recent version which includes the Fortunes Pack DLC that added three new weapons and two new vehicles to the game, as well as several new multiplayer maps.
One of the most interactive and destructible environments ever made for an open world game, with special attention paid to a realistic fire engine that's a pyromaniac's dream come true.
Fight for different rival factions as you confront the ugly truths about conflict in a poor, war-torn country.
Great story complemented by fantastic open world first-person gameplay!
There are several annoying things about this game that other reviews have covered. Back in the day, these things were annoying as well, but the freedom was so great, I could overlook a lot. If you come to this from a newer game, you'll probably be disappointed.
I used to love the multiplayer. Too bad that's long dead.
I never played Far Cry 1 but I have played every other Far Cry. This game sucks. The graphics and fire physics were ahead of it's time but that's about the only nice thing I can say.
The world is so incredibly dead. This is in Africa yet there is basically no wild life at all. In any of the sequels the wild life will attack each other, npcs and you. That is nowhere to be found here. There are also no npcs in this dead world. The excuse is that the civillians were all evacuated but that's just a cover up because they didn't feel like adding them. If you evacuate in real life some people will stay behind and remain at their home. It's you and all enemies that's literally it. No Friendly NPCs, wild life, civillians, NOTHING. The game is open world yet it is so incredibly linear in design. They could have created lush jungle, savannahs, deserts, praries. It just feels like an empty forest. The weapons degrade extremely fast and jam, terrible and unfun feature. Speaking of terrible and unfun features your character has malaria. You constantly need to find medicine. That's probably the worst design decision in the history of gaming. Not to worry though, I modded it out and the game still sucks balls. There are check points everywhere. You clear them out, drive 25 feet, turn around and everybody has already respawned like nothing has happened. The Villain is also incredibly forgettable which is Far Cry's strong suit. The gunplay also lacks here too and enemies are bullet spongey. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
I did like this game, but unfortunately one thing ruined it for me MALARIA. suddenly just collapsing when your in the middle of a mission in the game was sooooo annoying, the only think I can think of that would have been worse is if they added lots of timers.
it's geniuenly painful to play
animations are so slow, you constantly need to get out of your car and repair it, you're constantly fighting through the same enemy lookout areas since enemies respawn in about 3 minutes, the fast travel system sucks, this game would be 4 hours without all the busywork and slow ass animations but instead it's 16 hours of pain. Nothing is more annoying than driving through an enemy encampment you've gone through 10 times already, getting blasted with a rocket launcher and loosing 20 minutes of progress because there's no fucking autosave. I would not recommend this game to anyone ever, it's pure shit, it has like 0 redeeming qualities.
Far Cry 2 was a game that got good reviews from the press, but has inevitably gotten a reputation from most gamers as a boring, and repetitive game bogged down by respawning enemy checkpoints and constant hostile patrols. The first time I played the game, I had many of the same concerns. The way the game generally played out for me was that I would drive straight for my mission objective, along the way stopping several times to switch to my turret and take out a patrol, or stopping to clear out a checkpoint, and then I would get to do much the same thing at the mission site. And this was compounded by the fact that I usually had to repair me vehicle or switch to a new one in each of these encounters and that the checkpoints respawn when you leave that cell in the map. My first play through was about 4 hours and I quit.
Unfortunately, I don't think many people got beyond this experience. Far Cry 2 is, as much as I hate the phrase, the kind of game that I think you have to "play right" to enjoy. The checkpoints respawn, but that only encourages you to rough it offroad, find ways around them, and figure out the most efficient ways to clear them out. The patrols are always hostile and will chase you down for long distances, but they have consistent patrol routes that you can take advantage of to avoid or ambush them. Far Cry 2 is a game that encourages controlling every encounter to give yourself the advantage. Every mission is simply a single objective with no indication of how you have to approach it and each location is open-ended and smartly designed.
People also complained about the psuedo-realistic elements of the game that put you, unlike most FPS's, in a constant position of disadvantage. Weapons jam (especially those picked up by enemies), your car will break down if fired on and need to be repaired, you have malaria attacks regular interviews that essentially incapacitate you until you take your pill, fire can be useful, but it can become a serious hazard if the wind changes and blows it your way.
All of these elements add to the juxtaposition of unpredictability and control that the game thrives on. It encourages you to carefully plan your every move with the constant knowledge that your efforts could be undermined by all of these elements that don't always go in your favor. What could have been an easy search and destroy can turn into a down and out firefight when your carefully timed rocket turns out to be a dud. A planned sniper position could become useless as you have to switch to your secondary weapon because your sniper rifle breaks.
There is no other game quite like this one, and unfortunately there may never be, but you;ll never experience it if you don't give it a chance to shine.
