Far Cry® 2, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, takes many of the great ideas from the previous game and improves upon them, making a pulse-pounding, high-speed shooter that roars through the beautiful, if sere, environments of Central Africa. With stunning visuals and deep gameplay, this game takes everything you liked about Far Cry® and ramps it up to 11.
You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to do what it takes to take down the Jackal, a dirty arms merchant who has made your new homeland a war-torn hell.
You must identify and exploit your enemies’ weaknesses, neutralizing their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning, and of course, brute force.
This is the Fortune's Edition of Far Cry® 2, which is patched up (like every GOG game) to the most recent version which includes the Fortunes Pack DLC that added three new weapons and two new vehicles to the game, as well as several new multiplayer maps.
One of the most interactive and destructible environments ever made for an open world game, with special attention paid to a realistic fire engine that's a pyromaniac's dream come true.
Fight for different rival factions as you confront the ugly truths about conflict in a poor, war-torn country.
Great story complemented by fantastic open world first-person gameplay!
I had to play the game with directx9 and vsync at 60 to avoid crashes. Ai can hear u from 1000km if u sprint or use a vehicle. Mediocre story, punished for explorating.
The desperate atmosphere, difficulty (if you dare to set it to maximum) are what make this an experience to remember. AI react to your strategies like using the impressive fire physics, which open up out-maneuvering strategies rarely done well in the FPS genre since F.E.A.R. Health management is done well, regenerating from small hits but will lose permanent blocks from sustained damage. At the last health bar you need to prevent yourself from bleeding out, which in clutch situations can mean life or death. You may very well be risking a fatal shot while bleeding out just to take out the last hostile just so you can heal in peace. Each bleed-out-prevention animation is unique to the last damage type you received, making it very immersive.
The main cons are the respawning roadblocks, malaria shots that disrupt proper gameplay and most of the quests being uninteresting or frustrating. Driving is hit/miss. It's easy to control but the environments can feel like a choir to travel after enough time.
Has literally the best and most immersive map feature of any game I've played. It's rendered fully in-game, real-time and is used organically with 1st person perspective, changing your view to what's in front of you, the road, GPS and tracking device. You can feel like an off-road racer, knocking around your vehicle with a map, but then turn into James Bond at the first sight of trouble.
This is the only Far Cry game I recommend without hesitation because although it's far from perfect, it delivers something unique and unforgettable for me... something that doesn't come easily for this exhausted genre.
An above-average, but not great open-world shooter
Ah, Farcry 2. I have mixed feelings about this game, so I'll go into the good and bad:
The good: Great graphics, dynamic fire effects. No monsters this time around. Has that old-school shooter feel. Upgradable weapons. Cool animations for your character. Big, open environment. Fun to kill AI, at least for awhile. Ability to travel via bus to cut down on looonngg driving times. Cool mechanic where if you die, a buddy will come and rescue you.
The bad: Repetitive missions - especially side missions. Bad voice acting. Enemies respawn every time you leave the immediate vicinity - very annoying after awhile! Virtually every single NPC in the nation wants to kill you. Malaria scripting very annoying, but can be avoided for long stretches. It can be a chore to drive from point A to point B. Vehicles aren't as fun to drive as they should have been. Also, considering the subject matter, the game isn't edgy enough.
Summary: Far Cry 2 can be good if you are looking to scratch that shooter itch. It has that old school shooter feel, and doesn't feel like a COD clone. For whatever reason though, and it is hard to pin down, the game isn't nearly as fun as it should be. Graphics 8/10, gameplay 6/10, overall about 7/10 (rounded up to four stars on rating bar). This is the Fortune Edition, which I think includes some DLC that I did not have when I played it. A few new vehicles and maybe a new weapon or two. Being open world, the game does offer some good play length if you try to do everything. The average player will probably get at least 8-10 hours out of the game before it gets too boring to complete.
Some tips for those who decide to buy: Do as many side missions as you can to unlock better weaponry earlier. It is a huge help. Also, for those who hate the malaria mechanic, it only occurs when you complete story missions. So if you enjoy side missions, diamond hunting, and just exploring, you actually won't be affected by malaria much.
