Far Cry® 2, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, takes many of the great ideas from the previous game and improves upon them, making a pulse-pounding, high-speed shooter that roars through the beautiful, if sere, environments of Central Africa. With stunning visuals and deep gameplay, this game takes everything you liked about Far Cry® and ramps it up to 11.
You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to do what it takes to take down the Jackal, a dirty arms merchant who has made your new homeland a war-torn hell.
You must identify and exploit your enemies’ weaknesses, neutralizing their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning, and of course, brute force.
This is the Fortune's Edition of Far Cry® 2, which is patched up (like every GOG game) to the most recent version which includes the Fortunes Pack DLC that added three new weapons and two new vehicles to the game, as well as several new multiplayer maps.
One of the most interactive and destructible environments ever made for an open world game, with special attention paid to a realistic fire engine that's a pyromaniac's dream come true.
Fight for different rival factions as you confront the ugly truths about conflict in a poor, war-torn country.
Great story complemented by fantastic open world first-person gameplay!
Playing the game for first time in hardest difficulty in 2022. The atmosphere, the feeling of open-world, the hostility of the place, and the music.
It is not role-playing, there is no inventory like in STALKER series, but you have buddies and a insane atmosphere to dive in.
On hardest difficulty combat is pretty realistic, if you go Ramboid you will die, if you go with a tactic, relying on stealth, you may live a bit more. In my case, i enjoy this kind of challenge, a shooter where you are not a walking panzer. Ammunition is pretty low, despite is spread across the map in several spots, hostiles will respawn in them and you will have to tactic again for reach the resources.
Atmospheric and fun game, from the decent UbiSoft era.
The key: RIDE THE BUS. Pickup local transport when you arrive so you don't have to clear the same roadblock 5 times. Player at a quick march I found that a pretty good story caught hold.
Far Cry 2 released amidst stiff competition. It boasted TWO large open world maps. Features such as dynamic lighting, dynamic weather, destructible environments, destructible flora, a dynamic fire system and sophisticated a.i. Far Cry 2 is an ambitious title that also receives a lot of flak for its malaria crutch and repetitive mission structure of receive dossier, drive to location and kill or destroy said target. However, these complaints are unwarranted as the objective of all fps is usually to eliminate targets in the first person, and Far Cry 2 allows you a bevy of satisfying ways to do so.
Blow em sky high with an RPG, rain fire from above with a sniper rifle, go stealthy with the dart rifle from afar or sneak up on em with your silenced Makarov. Yes, the weapons you choose, time of day and harshness of weather do also effect how the a.i reacts, and the a.i is smart. They suppress you, snipe at you from eagles nests, flank you, avoid brushfires and grenades. The weather and lighting effects displayed across the savannah can be downright beautiful at times, with the magnificent grass density and draw distance. This game really drives on the atmosphere and that's why it is my favorite of them all.
I have a soft spot for Far Cry 2, the first person immersion of unjamming a gun, or bandaging yourself up or manually looking at a map just drives on the connection from player to virtual npc in my opinion. I could care less about the respawning npc's and guard posts because I know to avoid certain ones or approach certain ones containing ammo or meds. If i had only one complaint though, it would be the weapons merchant missions. The game is a lot more forgiving if you acquire all the good weapons as early on as possible and I like how they reconsidered this in the third game. With all that said, I think Far Cry 2 is a masterpiece and one of my favorite fps of 2008 and of all time. It still holds up very well and I would suggest anyone fond of fps to give it a try
Hot Death, Tragic Loss, Perfect Immersion:
This experience is nothing but primal rage. raw frustration, and the type of fun that elicits suggestive noises from your bedroom. Far Cry 2 starts off with a pleasant drive through the country side and a promise of beer. However, the happy little parasite in your body has other plans. No beer for you. 😢 Instead, you wake up to Nietzsche quotes, gun fire, and men screaming like children tantruming. With barely a regard given to your fragile virtual life, the game mentions which way is up and bids you to crawl between explosions, bullets, bodies and questionable decor.
The rest of the game is futility, chaos and hatred, incarnate. You will feel the heat, the struggle is real, and even the most Bob Ross of us may have to drop a few F-bombs with this title. Betrayal, greed, and unfair odds are the order of the day here. Each corner turned is either an opportunity or a death trap. On higher difficulties, do not expect to win a fight fairly. Fight dirty, be smart and run away to die horribly another day.
I've been playing this game for over a decade now across multiple platforms. I still keep coming back to it. If you enjoy that rising feeling that comes before a tense fight, if you love the rush of trading bullets in a burning field, and if it really gets you off to cause a chain reaction of explosions, carnage and pretty lights, this game is for you. If that is you, and you've never played this soul crushing nightmare, I have some advice for you:
ALWAYS BE PREPARED
AVOID FIRE
REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR MEDS
Also, check out Far Cry 2 Redux. It's a mod that adds some nice changes to a multitude of things. The map, guns, difficulty, customizable gameplay, the works.
