Description
A tropical paradise seethes with hidden evil in Far Cry, a cunningly detailed action shooter that pushed the boundaries of combat to shocking new levels.Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.

With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.

Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.
  • A unique sandbox FPS that allows you to complete your objectives in several different ways
  • Challenging A.I. that dynamically responds to your actions
  • Beautiful graphics, even by today’s standards, that can be upgraded even further by fan-made content

Technically Fantastic, but Lacking in Gameplay

Far Cry is in essence a very good looking and expertly crafted game that fails when it comes to making the player enjoy playing it. This game runs very well on modern PCs, and actually still looks good despite being about 5 years old. The controls are pretty fluid, even though they do take some getting used to, and the gunplay is actually somewhat entertaining. However, covering the basics succesfully rarely constitutes a game that's thoroughly good. Far Cry is not thoroughly good, it's simply good and simple fun. The gameplay falls because some of the elements the huge jungle surroundings enable are not properly executed. Sneaking up to people is very hard, in the latest patch the enemies can see you through tents and trees for example, and stealth is actually diminished entirely about 2/3 through the game with the introduction of a new enemies that can pretty much only be killed by you running into them and slashing them apart with bullets. Regarding the change in enemies, the other major problem with Far Cry is that it creates variety to it by using the wrong methods to do so. First of all, in order to keep you interested Far Cry throws these mutated supersoldiers at you when you have about one third of the game to go, which essentially makes it a rail shooter. I don't think variety should be achieved by diminishing the game that previously existed by destroying it's wonderful opening concepts, and that's what FC does in this respect. Also, one major problem is the lack of progress, or moreso the feel of it. You don't really feel like you're progressing throughout most of the game. The storyline is rather blatantly just an excuse for you to blow stuff up that it doesn't suffice as a driving force to keep you going on your adventure. The game features no roleplaying elements such as improving stats, and the surroundings are pretty much the same jungle/tunnel-mixes throughout. Hence, there's really no variety in Far Cry, and the little there is is created by picking up a new weapon, and mutants coming in. This doesn't make the player feel like he's advancing any where at any time, so it feels sub-par and Far Cry doesn't give you a sense of accomplishment. But that doesn't mean it isn't possible to enjoy it. Like Painkiller, Far Cry is best enjoyed as a once-a-week treat for action fans. The action is good as long as you play it rarely enough. Would you pay 10 bucks for having a few hours of fun a week for a few months? I would, but I actually already own this one boxed. If you're dying for some action, get this or Painkiller, they're both well worth the money here at GOG.com.

Fun but Difficult, I Cheated

I enjoyed this game a lot but it was very difficult and I had to cheat. You can't change the difficulty level after you start. I picked Normal (should have picked Easy). I could not get past the early Carrier level. Enemies hit hard, spawn behind you, the screen will freeze occasionaly usually resulting in you dead, and save points are very far apart. I was ready to quit in frustration but some things saved my game. Manual Save: Press tilda ~ to enter command screen. Type "\save_game name" no quotes. Press ~ again. On Line Guides: Very helpful in getting past hard parts. Tells you where secret ammo and health are. My favorite was https://www.gamespot.com/articles/far-cry-walkthrough/1100-6094321/ With all that I still could not beat Krieger and his 4 goons. I had to do devmode and god mode for that 1 fight. The best description for this is here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1194232992 Note for devmode using COG it doesn't work from the desktop shortcut, you have to find the Launch Far Cry shorcut in COG_Galaxy\Games\Far Cry folder and apply it there.

Best version you can get, but...

This game hasn't aged well at all, it's almost a tech demo for what Crytek had in store a couple of years after with Crysis, the graphics are incredible for the time, but the story and the gameplay all suffer from a severely unbalanced difficulty curve, I'm personally into challenging games, love some contemporaries like From Soft games & Vampire Survivors -just to give some examples-, but this game doesn't handle difficulty balancing well in the least. Your health doesn't regenerate which would be fine, but the health pickups are scattered in a terribly paced way throughout the levels, at times it also relies heavily in a supremely archaic stealth system that doesn't really work as well as the developers might've thought. Then there's the fact that the game doesn't have manual saving, it relies on checkpoints which are thankfully plentyful, but that don't contribute to how poorly paced and balanced the whole experience becomes because of poor, poor difficulty balancing. It's a shame because the GOG version is easily the best way to play this game, about the only issue it has is that the vsync option doesn't work, but pcgamingwiki has a patch to fix this, however, this version does fix the known "tent bug" which makes it so enemies can shoot you through tents (as if the game wasn't tedious enough), plus it also has native widescreen support; it works out of the box! Just wish it was a better game.

masterpiece

A classic shooter from the golden age of modern gaming. There is enough comedy in those dialogs and music ( oh the combat music) to get you through the whole game. It may seem difficuly at first but it grows on you.

Frustrating Checkpoint Saving System

The only thing I hate about this game is the checkpoint saving system. I don't understand the reason for a PC game to have such a console feature. It's most annoying at times having to remake a section over and over again because some creep got a lucky shot at you.
