War may not change. Interpretation does.
- I've never played Fallout 1 or 2. Can I start with F3? Yes. There are several references to the previous parts, but they do not matter that much. The situation is different with New Vegas though, whose world connects much more to original games. - I am an old fan of Fallout 1 and 2. Should I try F3? Yes. However be warned that this is a different interpretation. Fallout 1 was a narrow, simple, minimalist and very grim game. I would describe it as a "post-apocalyptic dark fantasy with knights in power armors and orcs with lasers". Fallout 2 showed the wider world, allowing the player to navigate in the more real, unclear, uncertain theatre of politics and dirty business. You would meet good people considered bad and bad people pretending to be good. And Fallout 3? Here you are free most of the time and you do what you want. Story doesn't matter. You mostly explore the world and kill things you don't even care about. People have over 100 hours not because the game is so long. It's because it's a sandbox. - Why some people call F3 a great game? Because it fits perfectly into contemporary trends. It's casual, light, endless. You can explore its vast and highly detailed world house after house for hours, and boredom is fought by constantly returning creatures to kill. You just return home, turn on the "Wastelands VR", and do what you like. A bit like Minecraft. - Why some people call F3 a garbage? Because they were looking for a dark depressing atmosphere of the apocalypse with tangled plot and those dramatic moments you remember for years. They saw "The Book of Eli"* , read "Metro 2033", played "Stalker". Instead, they got a lazy easy going action/exploration game for teens and some fancy jazz music. Only cartoon graphics were missing. They did not expect such a childish interpretation and nobody prepared them for it. (* Not everyone bought F3 in the year of release.) - Ok, so is it worth buying Fallout 3? It depends on you. What kind of game you're looking for?
