Set in the aftermath of a world-wide nuclear war, Fallout will challenge you to survive in an unknown and dangerous world. You will take the role of a Vault-dweller, a person who has grown up in a secluded, underground survival Vault. Circumstances arise that force you to go Outside - to a strange world 80 years after the end of modern civilization. A world of mutants, radiation, gangs and violence.
Your immediate task is to find a replacement for the broken water purification controller chip. Without that chip, your fellow Vault dwellers are doomed to dehydration or will be forced to leave the safety of the Vault for the Outside.
The core of the game revolves around your character. Fallout uses a skill-based system to allow you to fine tune your character. As you gain experience (roughly half from combat, the other half from solving adventure seeds and non-combat events), your character will grow as you determine. Combat in Fallout is tactical turn-based. You can take as much time as you need to make decisions. Choose from different types of attacks, with a variety of weapons and attack skills.

Might as well pirate it or buy an old copy from craiglist or whatever. Or use fanpatches anyway.... Frankly prefered Tactics for better combat mechanics and equipment.
I've wanted to write a review for a long time now, being a member of GOG for many years. I was cleaning out my computer when I realised I had a LOT of old games I hadn't played for years. Fallout was one of them. This was the first game I truly enjoyed, loved and played more than once. It's still sitting on my gaming shelf.
Believe it or not, but I bought the game, without ever having heard anything about it and without knowing anything of what kind of game it was. It was a couple of years after it's initial release and about two years after Fallout 2. Possibly in 2001, close to my 41 birthday, I walked around in a store completely unaware that my life was about to change.
I walked up to the stores stock of downsized items and found a heap of PC-games. Among those I found Fallout at the amazing price of $1.5. I bought that game and a few others, went home and started to play...
Luckily I began with Fallout. As soon as I realized that this was a real gem I started to google it and found out that there was a second game! I went back to the store and managed to find Fallout 2 too! And that's where my long love affair with Fallout started. I loved the humor. I admired the story. And though I own all the games in the series it's still the first game I cherish. I'm pushing towards my sixties and on my birthday I will celebrate by playing Fallout for the 'nth time... It's better than cake.
So, this was my first review. I can't think of any of my games that deserves this more.
I have the old "Fallout Classic" edition which is way better than GoG's current release. Look for a more complete edition if you can get it. But this is a great game, and the current edition is fine.
What's so great about Fallout? Inspired by a blend of Mad Max and 1950s-era propaganda, this game's atmosphere is among the greatest ever concocted. Everything is deeply satirical and haunting. You play The Vault Dweller, an enigmatic figure who grows up in an underground vault after the final nuclear holocaust has destroyed the land. A malfunctioning water chip has put your people in danger. You must go out to find a replacement part, to save your people- and perhaps the world.
To be fair, there are flaws. There's a few invisible timers that will cause game over if not watched. In short, you must find the water chip at once or you could get a game over if you just enjoy the vastness of the game instead of playing the main story. Spoiler-free guides exist to rush to stop the timers, or you can mod them out entirely. Either way will improve your game. There's just too much to enjoy, it can't be rushed like that. The timer isn't that harsh, but still- you don't want a Game Over from enjoying the game too much.
The systems powering the game are amazing, and equal the atmosphere and writing, which are both all-time-greats. They basically wanted to launch something powered by Steve Jackson's GURPS, and due to various issues ended up modifying it to create SPECIAL. The power of the GURPS-a-like system is flexibility. You can make radically different builds from unarmed fighters to snipers to scientists, and the game rewards almost any approach. You also get a wealth of combat options- ever wanted to punch an ant in the thorax with an exact percentage to hit? Now's you chance. Turn-based, isometric, action-point-driven, mayhem.
Great setting, great characters, great systems, and so much content. You will get lost for days on your own personal story, and it will be great.
I already own the old Fallout games in the library on GOG. They're called Fallout Classics and include much more goodies. These games that are now discounted (October 2021) are the same games as the classic ones minus a lot of goodies included in the Classic games.
I played Fallout 3, New Vegas (Didn't finish yet, but planning to, no doubt) and 4, and then I was like "I need to play some more Fallout" but I didn't connect to the top down turn based earlier Fallouts, but then it was a Steam sale, so I was like, why not? I bought it, and refunded it because I was annoyed by the turn based stuff, I was so bad at this. But I still had a feeling that it is a good game if I get better at the turn based combat. After a few months, GOG Summer Sale came online, and I decided to buy the Fallout Series since it was really cheap. I got better at the turn based combat, and I DO NOT REGRET BUYING IT, it is a really good game and I like it so much, if you are a fan of the Fallout series, or the series looks interesting to you, BUY IT.
