I have somewhere north of two thousand hours into this game and still enjoy playing. Unbelievably responsive dev team. Mods are fully and enthusiastically supported, complete with an integrated mod portal. The modding community produces more content than anyone can keep up with, so there's guaranteed to be something you'll enjoy even if you get bored of vanilla after 'only' a few hundred hours. The game itself is rigorously optimized to run flawlessly even on ancient hardware, or to scale to ridiculously huge bases on the latest and greatest. Online multiplayer supports up to several hundred people at once. I've played since version 0.15, and the game was release quality even then. They spent three more years putting a fine polish on every aspect of the game from interface to graphics to sound to usability features, plus some additional game mechanics. This game's interface will forever spoil you on other logistics games.

My review: the game is lovely. I just got it, and played for three days straight, just stopping for food and sleep. It's been a long time since a game grabbed me like this. If you like automating and optimizing an interesting world, go for it. My tip: don't read any wiki's etc, it's much more fun to figure stuff out on your own.

I agree that the claim of being DRM-free is a little weaker than some, but to be fair, you only need an account to access services hosted by the developer. i.e. those things which they put additional ongoing expenses into. Namely the mod portal and multiplayer matchmaking. And you can still "side-load" mods and connect to friends directly without using any of that. As for the game itself, it isn't for everyone, but if you like brainy automation games there's a good chance you'll love this. I think it's fair to call it genre-defining.

Be aware that this game is highly addictive and you might loose your job (seriously, but it didn't happen here) or your friends (na, half-joking here). So far I can tell, this game seem to have "no" limits, as you can build ... and build ... and build ... and upgrade ... and upgrade ... and expand your base and so on and so forth. I played it with enemies and found it even better when in free-mode with no enemies to get a feeling of the mechanics "only". Later I ended up expanding my base (in November 2019 mainly) excessively and have a large bot network with over 150k bots, both types together (logistics/construction). The right balance will greatly improve your base production output, so if you have an overflow on iron plate on one side of the base but a shortage on the other side, just build a long convey belt over there to produce up more items. I do this over building short distance conveys and no trains at all. In other words, very long convey belts "pipes" the products/materials around the base on sometimes 15 belts siding on each other. My result: A satisfying production-line build-up game and the soundtrack is just awesome!
