Expeditions: Conquistador is a tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence.
Exotic historical setting with far-reaching ethical implications - balance your relations with the natives against the wishes of your expedition members.
Intuitive and flexible turn-based combat system with highly varied and detailed battlefields that will keep you on your toes.
Manage the morale, rations, and resources of your expedition as you overcome the dangers of the Aztec territories.
The story is pretty linear with few choices don't expect much in terms of RPG and making important choices. It is only there to give a framework for the tactical combat. The strategic combat is fun in the beginning but you will tire quickly as halfway through you will have reached the extent of growth and not much in terms of building/leveling up than a few simple skill choices. Very slow responsiveness in menus, with no rhyme or reason on a high end computer, shows poor programming. Good for a little laugh and keep you entertained for a couple of weeks maybe but not at full price, not worth it.
So I bought this for about 2 euros without knowing what it was and I was suprised of how deep this game is. Anybody who have played Heroes of Might and magic will find similarities but Expeditions is much more advanced and have alot better story. The learning curve might be a bit harsch, it's quite difficult and after an hour or two you would like to restart the game to configure and play it the way you want. But all in all a very good game.
I'm a big fan of turn based games and this was a great surprise from a small indie team.
This game has some epic music and some - by the skin of your teeth combat.
It's very political in nature and there's some tough choices to make and who you'll side with.
Very addictive and charming.
Expeditions:Conquistador is a well written Tactical RPG positing an alternate History where Cortez never made his famous voyage to conquer Mexico because you end up doing it instead. You start out choosing a group of soldiers, scouts, scholars, hunters, etc and building your own character before setting out for the new world. The first part of the game takes place in Hispaniola, which gets you used to how the game works and a decent amount of time and experience to level up before proceeding to Mexico(once that's done you can start in Mexico on later playthroughs).
Most of the story is told through textboxes with numerous dialogue options to allow you to sometimes change the story and other times make battles easier if not outright avoiding them. It also allows you to play "good" or "evil" by trying to accomplish your goals through diplomacy, trade or violence, allowing a course of history where the natives weren't steamrolled by the Spanish but rather engaged in mutual cooperation to some extent.
The rest of the game is played though a world map and a battle map, where you can explore, gather resources and fight your enemies in squad battles not unlike a game like XCOM.
The game only has two major issues. The first is that the enemy AI is rather dumb, preferring to on the offensive regardless of the circumstances, and in some cases, battles where the enemy is explicitly meant to be fighting a defensive battle. The other is that the endings are mostly based on how much money you had at the end and how much you "achieved", which seems to be limited if you ended up totally conquering Mexico as opposed to, say, deposing the Aztecs but establishing excellent relationships with the other native tribes/cities as well as building up a strong garrison and base on the continent.
Still an engaging historical-based RPG regardless and worth a play for anyone interested in either this period in history or tactical RPGs.
I really liked the artstyle, how the story was told, how you get to know the characters and how many random things happened to them. The developers did a great job at those parts! The micromanagement at every camp is nice for a while, but gets a bit too repetative. The too close camera in the worldmap is frustrating, and it sometimes also get stuck on objects. This is the part that needs fixing.
All in all a very addictive game that kept me going for 50+ hours.
