Expeditions: Conquistador is a tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence.
Exotic historical setting with far-reaching ethical implications - balance your relations with the natives against the wishes of your expedition members.
Intuitive and flexible turn-based combat system with highly varied and detailed battlefields that will keep you on your toes.
Manage the morale, rations, and resources of your expedition as you overcome the dangers of the Aztec territories.
Whatever your decision, the result is always :
Your ***** followers have lost morale
Your ***** followers have lost morale
Your ***** followers have lost morale
With this kind of "RPG", I've lost morale.
Note: I'm a hard reviewer. Games that usually people rate with 5 starts I rate with 3.
Expeditions: Conquistador (EC) is a game that has some technical problems but its charming as hell. Technically the graphics are good, but I think they are not optimized, because they use too much of your CPU power. The music is one of the strong points of this game, it's really lovely and if you allow immerse yourself in the game experience it will motivate you to save that character or to defend that position. You will feel.
EC has two campaign, with multiple choices and with some replay value. I only played once, but I tested some choices saving before doing it. The story is very well done, and again, it's and important immersive element.
Why not 5 stars? Because, the game isn't as long as I expected for the price. The early mentioned technical stuff. There is some materials / skills / classes that aren't as useful as others (bad balance). You only need to explore the map to win the game.
Upfront: i only played for an hour, before i deinstalled it again. While i was rather envolved in the Story and Idea and was mmore annoied by other things liek the controls.
My first timpression when i started the game:
The intro story is very good, but graficly feel like they are not made with love. (i dont need high res grafics)
When the actual game starts you have to run around forth and back alot, which gave me the feeling of someone just placing stuff on the map, not narrating me through the tutorial.
The tutorial is very detailed and yet missing important information.
The UI is unintuative and again feels loveless and inefficient.
The music and sounds are nice and put you in the right mood and - again - the story seems great so far.
The fighting system has some nice ideas (nice implementation of "strikes of oppertunity" abd "flanking"). But i had no fun with my first.
Why does the tutorial explain that "green" is how far i can walk and cover grants cover, but not how to end my turn, or that i can only attack once. the first two rounds i thought characters move in turns, but turns out, groups move in turns (so yeah i ended the turn of my party waiting for the others teammembers to get "their turn" while having 2 of 3 characters just standing there)
So i would recommend trying it out first somewhere and come back to buy it if you wanted to continue after the first camp.
